Go to Settings > General > About, and then tap the Model Number.
Generation 3 is A2595, A2782, A2784, A2785, or A2783.
Generation 2 is A2275, A2298, or A2296.
Generation 1 is A1723, A1662, or A1724 stamped on the back cover.

Settings>General>About>Model... double tap there until you see an "Axxxx" code (where xxxx are four numbers).
- If it is A2275 (Canada, United States), A2298 (China mainland),A2296 (other countries and regions) = 2nd Generation
- If it is A2595 (United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Mexico, Saudi Arabia), A2782 (Japan), A2784 (Russia, Armenia,Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan), A2785 (China), A2783 (other countries and regions) = 3rd Generation
Regards
Giulio

As a matter of fact, every single iPhone ever released, going back to 2007, has an internal SIM card.
Wrong.
Look at the specifications for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 versions sold in the U.S. to confirm that these phones are eSIM only. There is no internal SIM card in any of these models.

One difference is that the Gen 3 has an internal SIM card so it’s helpful to know that aspect . I like the lightning connector. Although sometimes they do become oxidized and fail to charge.

It really doesn’t matter as they all use a lightning connector.

That's not correct. Every generation has an internal SIM card. As a matter of fact, every single iPhone ever released, going back to 2007, has an internal SIM card.
