If you run a data center of any size, it is helpful to educate yourself about data center infrastructure management (DCIM). DCIM software is a tool used to monitor and manage the physical infrastructure of a data center.

Why DCIM and Not 'Photos'? DCIM stands for Digital Camera Images, which probably helps this folder make a little more sense. Something like Photos or Images would be much more clear and easy to spot, but there is a reason for this decision.

One of the files preinstalled on your Android smartphone is called DCIM, which stands for Digital Camera Images. All photographs taken using the Camera on your phone will be saved in this folder. It includes any screenshots you have taken on the device in question.

Way 1: Connect Your Camera to your PC Directly

Step 1: Connect your camera to the computer with a USB cable. Step 2: Press Win + E to open File Explorer on the computer. Step 3: Wait for a few seconds, and you will find a new drive appeared. Step 4: Double-click on it and you'll see the DCIM folder.

There are many reasons why the iPhone will create additional DCIM folders. After a certain number of photos, it may create a new folder. Or if a different app is used to take the photos, it may create a new DCIM folder. Also, you can sync photos from your computer to your iPhone using iTunes.

How do DCIM folders work? ›

The DCIM ("Digital Camera Images") folder is the default folder where all photos are stored in your phone's internal storage. You can access it either through "My Files," as shown in the steps in the image I've attached.

DCIM is short for “Digital Camera Images.” DCIM is a folder that is automatically created on the SD card by your camera. The camera use the DCIM folder to store the videos and photos captured by the camera.

The root level is what the DCIM and MISC folders are in. It's the blank space in the window that opens when you double-click on your SD card.

To find and open the DCIM folder on a PC, unlock your iPhone or Android phone or other devices, connect your device to a computer, tap Trust This Computer on your device to get your device to trust the computer. Open File Explorer on the computer and select Computer > your device > Internal Storage > DCIM.
