For the very first time in the history of Microsoft, Bill Gates, the founder of the world’s giant software conglomerate is no longer its major shareholder. In the past two days, Mr. Gates has sold almost 8 million shares of Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500), bringing down his total to roughly 330 million which puts him behind Microsoft’s former CEO Steve Ballmer who owns 333 million shares.
Gates owned 49% of Microsoft at its IPO in the year 1986, which made him an instant multi-millionaire. With Microsoft’s incredible growth, he soon became the world’s richest person, and retains that title with a fortune of $77 billion until today, according to Forbes.
Gates handed over the CEO role to Ballmer in 2000, and took up as the chairman in February. He continues to remain in the board and spends one third of his time as a technology adviser to new the Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Ballmer, one of the first hires of Mr. Gates’ was Microsoft’s CEO until earlier this year. It’s a passing of the torch for Bill Gates who has always been the principal single owner of his company’s stock. The foundation has spent over $28 billion fighting poverty and hunger since its commencement from 1997. For more than six years now, his major focus has been on philanthropy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is largely funded by his Microsoft fortune.
