Accelerator (4)

"Charge a laser and release massive damage at deadly rates!"
―Store Description

Description

The Accelerator is a hardcore tower that attacks in delayed bursts. It has a charge-up that happens before the burst and a cooldown that happens after the burst. During the burst, it can deal massive amounts of damage in a short period of time, but does no damage in between bursts. It can be purchased from the store for Accelerator (5) 2,500 and has a level requirement of Level 50.

The Accelerator must charge-up its plasma gun before it can attack enemies. During its attack, it will fire in quick, high damaging bursts, remaining focused on one enemy unless that enemy is killed or leaves the Accelerator's range. The Accelerator can deal with a specific amount of damage before cooling down with its left hand, indicating that the plasma gun has overcharged. After this, there will be a cooldown lasting a couple of seconds, after which it charges up again. The amount of damage needed for the Accelerator to overcharge can be seen above its tower icon in the upgrade box or when you hover your cursor over it. Damage can go above this threshold, though the Accelerator will stop attacking immediately once it does so. For example, if the Accelerator deals 175 damage out of 180 and has 10 damage, it will deal 185 damage total in that burst, assuming the enemy it attacks has at least 10 health. The Accelerator can damage lead enemies from Level 0 and detect Hidden enemies from Level 1.

The Accelerator is considered a mid to late-game tower because of its high damage capabilities but expensive cost.

The Accelerator has a placement limit of eight per player.

Strategy

  • For the mid and late-game, the Accelerator can be extremely powerful.
    • Multiple Level 3-4 Accelerators are a cost-efficient way to get through the mid-game.
    • The Farm or other towers that generate income like the Golden Cowboy are recommended, as the Accelerator's upgrades are quite expensive.
    • The Commander and DJ Booth are always great support towers to use with the Accelerator, increasing its DPS and range and reducing its expensive upgrade prices.
      • Do note that the Commander only boosts the Accelerator's tick, not the charge-up or cooldown times. When using the Commander's Call to Arms, make sure it is used when it starts firing to maximize the effect.
  • The Accelerator's lock-on mechanic can be a disadvantage. For example, the Accelerator locks onto a strong enemy like the Giant Boss, it will stay locked on until the strong enemy is defeated or leaves its range. This can result in the Accelerator leaking faster enemies.
    • Other towers should be used to defeat the faster enemies.
    • This is generally not an issue if the Accelerator can defeat the strong enemy very quickly.
  • The Accelerator's lengthy charge-up and cooldown times hinders it greatly, with enemies getting out of range before the Accelerator can defeat them in the worst cases.
    • The Level 5 Accelerator's charge-up and cooldown times are not as great an issue as the lower levels.
      • Due to this and some other factors, it is generally unfeasible to use the Accelerator for early game, with its sluggish charge-up of the lower levels resulting in some fast enemies leaking.
    • The Accelerator should be able to cover large amounts of the path. The DJ Booth is great here for boosting the Accelerator's range.
    • Slowing towers like the Sledger, or alternatively, the Electroshocker, can be used to support the Accelerator, slowing the enemy down and giving the Accelerator enough time to charge-up and attack them.
    • Other towers can help clear up the enemies from the Accelerator’s leaks.
  • Try to ensure the Accelerator does not get stunned by placing it a good distance away from the path, letting it avoid stuns from enemies like the Boomer or Fallen Guardian, so that it does not have to charge-up again.
    • The Accelerator, when stunned, will charge-up but not attack and instead immediately perform its cooldown.
  • The Accelerator can be used to defeat lead enemies from Level 0.
    • Due to the Accelerator's high cost, it should not be used to deal with early game Leads and Lead Bosses.

Trivia

  • The Accelerator is loosely based on the Sparky from Clash Royale.
    • The Accelerator's plasma gun is loosely based on the Gluon Gun from Half-Life.
  • Prior to the 12th of March 2022, the Accelerator was the only tower that could receive cash from summoned enemies.
    • After the update, the Accelerator is no longer able to receive cash from these enemies in most gamemodes.
  • The Accelerator used to have hidden detection at Level 0, however, as of the Unwavering Tides Update this is no longer the case.
  • The current Accelerator Level 5 upgrade name is an abbreviation of the word "VOID" (Vessel Of Infinite Destruction).
    • This name may be a tribute to the Level 5 upgrade name used before the 5th of May 2023, "Energy from the Void".
  • The Accelerator is currently the only tower to have the lock-on mechanic.
    • The only other tower that had this mechanic was the Sentry, but it was removed in the Overhaul Update.
    • The Demoman has a similar mechanic, but it works differently than the Accelerator's lock-on.
  • The Accelerator was originally supposed to have drones.
    • The drones can still be seen on one of the game icons.
  • Prior to the Frost Invasion Update, it was possible to see some of the Accelerator's statistics from private testing sessions in the lobby. These were:
    • Damage: 3
    • Firerate: 0.2
    • Range: 18
    • Placement limit: 5
  • Prior to the 5th of May 2023, the Accelerator had its damage statistic vary per firerate.
    • The Accelerator was originally supposed to increase its damage over time by gaining a damage buff.
      • This was most likely changed because it was very similar to the Phaser from Tower Battles.
  • The Accelerator is currently the third most expensive tower to place down, only beaten by the Ranger by Accelerator (69)$250 and Turret by Accelerator (70)$1,750.
    • Prior to 28th of October 2023, the Accelerator had the most expensive placement cost in the game.

Notes

  1. The Charge-Up happens when the Accelerator first starts attacking or its cooldown ends. This is indicated by an animation where the Accelerator charges up its plasma gun.
  2. The Cooldown happens when the Overcharge occurs. This is indicated by an animation where the Accelerator waves its hand.
  3. DPS is calculated as Overcharge ÷ (Charge-Up + Cooldown + [Overcharge ÷ Damage x Tick]).
  4. Can be obtained by using a code you got for purchasing a Accelerator Plush.
  5. Was a limited time skin obtainable between the 4th of May 2024 and 6th of May 2024.
