It's simple: duct tape simply doesn't provide a sufficiently strong seal.

Use tape that is designed for shipping - packaging tape or strapping tape is recommended for closures. Do not use gift wrapping, cellophane tape, duct tape and masking tape as these are not strong enough to withstand temperature fluctuations during transit.

Duct tape generally doesn't adhere well to cardboard and can be very expensive compared to other packing tapes. You can use it for labeling boxes, but otherwise, look elsewhere for packing tape.

Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape. Do not use cord, string, twine, masking, or cellophane tape. Place a strip of clear packaging tape over your label to prevent the address from smearing.

Do not use cellophane tape, duct tape, masking tape, string, or rope to seal packages. Place delivery information inside and outside the package. Include an address for your recipient and yourself.

The temperature range of packing tape covers a wider variety of temperatures than other tapes. Duct tape has a weaker adhesive in comparison. You may find duct take losing some of its adhesion during times of hot or cold weather.

Get Your Package Ready

For inexpensive contents, Scotch 371 packing tape is recommended. For moderately expensive contents, Scotch 372 packing tape is recommended. For expensive contents, Scotch 375 packing tape is recommended.
