Season 2 of Our Flag Means Death concluded in October 2023, leaving fans to wonder about the fate of many characters. At last blush, Stede and Blackbeard are romantically reunited after their time apart. Meanwhile, the pirates on the Revenge ship are joined by Zheng, Auntie, and Spanish Jackie to defeat one of the most barbarous enemies on the high seas. With all the chaos taking place, it's easy to lose track of what became of Lucius Spriggs (Nathan Foad), the de facto scribe of the crew who is tasked with logging their adventures.

Although Season 3 of Our Flag Means Death has yet to be officially announced by HBO, showrunner David Jenkins has assured fans that a continuation of Blackbeard and Stede's journey has already been charted. If the show is greenlit for another season, Jenkins feels confident the story will conclude with Season 3 (via Screen Rant). As fans await the future of Our Flag Means Death Season 3, it's time to reflect on the fate of Lucius Spriggs and clear up what transpired with his character by the end of Season 2.

When Ed, a.k.a. Blackbeard (played by Taika Waititi), and Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) reunite at the end of Season 1, Lucius becomes their number-one cheerleader and works hard to ensure their romantic happiness. However, when Stede temporarily leaves, Lucius begins to help Ed heal and the two become closer. However, when Izzy (Con O'Neill) begins meddling in their relationship, Ed brazenly betrays Lucius, assumes the evil Kraken personality, and shockingly tosses Lucius off the ship to sink to his demise.

Fans of the acclaimed HBO original comedy series were left to assume that Lucius died on that ill-fated day at sea. However, Jenkins assured fans that Lucius' life took a much different turn than it appears on the show. According to Jenkins via Business Insider:

"You can't kill off Nathan Foad! He's fantastic. I never intended to kill Lucius. He's the best. But I liked that that character met with a violent fate after being so kind to Blackbeard. To have him come back and be a little damaged and be like an 'angry young man' version of Lucius was fun to play with. And I think Nathan had fun playing that."

What Really Happens to Lucius in Season 2

Despite appearing to be cast away into the sea and left to drown in a morbid fate, Jenkins continues to suggest that Lucius is indeed alive and well. But a brush with death dramatically changes Lucius' outlook, and the normally supportive and cheery scribe takes a deliberately dark turn and begins to embrace his own sense of evil and violence. According to Jenkins, Lucius' phony on-screen demise was meant to catalyze his unpredictable character arc as he begins to evolve (or devolve) from light to dark.

Once Lucius is pushed off the ship in Ed's attempt to recapture his Blackbeard persona, the scribe does not drown to death as presumed by fans. Instead, Lucius is rescued by an unnamed vessel at sea and begins to live alone, hopping from ship to ship without a crew. When Lucius does interact with others, he's often forced to perform humiliating acts and go to embarrassing lengths to ensure his survival. The last time fans see Lucius, he is rounded up by the all-female pirate ship, The Red Flag, where he becomes reacquainted with Zheng (Ruibo Qian) and most of Stede's crew.

What Lies Ahead For Lucius

Although Lucius survived Blackbeard's attempt to take his life by pushing him off the Revenge, the character will be forever changed in the future. The popular Max Original show will remain a comedy, but Lucius will inhabit a much darker and more aggressive role moving forward as he plots vengeance against Ed. However, it's also important to note that Lucius must also balance his newfound malice with his happiness as a newlywed. At the end of Season 2, Lucius marries Black Pete (Matthew Maher), which signifies much lighter and happier times for Lucius. How his holy matrimony will conflict with his vengeful ire makes the potential return of Season 3 destination viewing.

After all, while abroad on the Red Flag's ship, Lucius befriends Fang, and Fang quickly becomes endeared by the scribe and goes out of his way to look after him. How this will play into Lucius' marriage to Black Pete is anyone's guess at this point, which also makes the need for Season 3 even greater. Of course, the central bond between Stede and Lucius also requires a more satisfying sense of closure after the two spent so much time together in the first two seasons. Without Lucius vouching for Stede to the Royal Navy, Stede never would have been granted his bona fides as a real pirate. Considering all Lucius has done for Stede, seeing their relationship evolve in the future could potentially atone for what happened to Lucius at the end of Season 2. Stay tuned for a Season 3 renewal of Our Flag Means Death for more. Stream on Max.
