Jim Jimenez (2024)

Jim Jimenez is a side-character in Our Flag Means Death played by Vico Ortiz.

History[]

Early Life[]

Jim was born in St. Augustine. On the day of their birth, their family planted an orange tree on their land. When they were still a child, their father was murdered by a gang of mercenaries called Siete Gallos. Jim ran away with their father's dagger until they were found weeks later and taken in by a nun called "Nana", who taught them to throw knives and encouraged them to take revenge for the death of the Jimenez family.

The Republic of Pirates[]

When Jim was old enough, they left St. Augustine and found one of the men who murdered their father in the Republic of Pirates. This is presumably where they met Oluwande. With his help, they found a job as a waitress in a tavern owned by Spanish Jackie and managed to kill the man with the Jimenez family dagger. As this man was Spanish Jackie's favorite husband, his murder caused her to want revenge on Jim. Jim was forced to flee the Republic of Pirates and Oluwande went with them. The Jimenez family dagger stayed behind.

Part of Stede Bonnet's Crew[]

After they were wanted in the Republic of Pirates for the murder of Spanish Jackie's husband, Jim and Oluwande joined Stede Bonnet's crew on his ship the Revenge. Jim put on a fake beard, a wax nose and a wide hat, and pretended to be mute so as not to be discovered.

Their identity was first discovered by Lucius Spriggs when Jim took off the beard and nose and went bathing on a beach. Though Lucius was able to keep this secret, after the crew of the Revenge went to visit the Republic of Pirates and Jim visited Spanish Jackie's tavern again, Jackie recognized them. Secretly, she made a deal with the Spanish, who captured the crew of the Revenge and made Jim's identity known to everyone by peeling off their beard and nose.

Though their identity as a "woman" and as "Jim" (and as a possible mermaid) was questioned by the crew afterwards, they were soon accepted by everyone. Lucius managed to steal the Jimenez family dagger from Spanish Jackie and returned it to Jim, earning their trust.

Part of Blackbeard's Crew[]

When Blackbeard returned from Barbados without Stede and marooned most of Stede's original crew, he kept Jim on board of the Revenge.

Relationships[]

The Nun[]

The Nun, whom Jim calls "Nana" raised them after their parents were murdered. She trained Jim to fight and kill before sending them on a mission to get revenge. When Jim comes back to St. Augustine, the Nun is disappointed that they only killed one of the murderers and talks them into following what she sees as their true purpose. Jim agrees, although they later abandon their mission after speaking with Spanish Jackie.

Stede Bonnet[]

Stede originally does not know much about Jim other than that they are supposedly a mute man who was friends with Oluwande. However, he later learns that Jim has been disguising themself as a man to escape from Spanish Jackie's wrath after they killed one of her husbands, Alfeo de La Vaca. While Jim originally views Stede as "the worst f*ckin' pirate captain in history", as with the rest of the crew, they eventually grow to like and respect Stede, and even let him keep the petrified orange he found on their family's land in St. Augustine.

Blackbeard[]

Blackbeard is aware of Jim's skills as a fighter and considers them a valuable addition to his "new crew". Because of this, he takes them hostage after taking over the Revenge and stranding most of the crew on a desert island.

Oluwande Boodhari[]

Oluwande seems to have been in love with Jim from before they both joined Stede's crew, but unwilling or unable to voice his feelings for quite some time. It is for Jim that Olu refuses the Tribal Elder's invitation to stay on the Mabo Island, despite knowing he is putting himself in danger. He is eager to learn about Jim and pushes them to open a little during their trip to St. Augustine. When Jim decides to stay behind and pursue vengeance on their family's killers, Oluwane is so heartbroken he gives up the room the two of them shared. Upon Jim's return, the two can't hide their feelings for each other any longer and share a passionate kiss. They are later seen cuddling when Lucius walks in on them by mistake. When Olu and the crew are taken to a desert island - supposedly to put on a talent show - Oluwande is clearly distressed Jim isn't there.

Lucius Spriggs[]

Lucius is the first person to discover Jim's true identity. This lands him in trouble, as Jim first attacks Lucius, who barely manages to escape, and then kidnaps him to keep their secret safe. Upon his release, Lucius doesn't seem to have any hostility towards Jim over this and steals their family dagger from Spanish Jackie. When he hands it over, Jim kisses him, and he states he's strangely into them. After this, the two remain friendly.

Spanish Jackie[]

Jim and Jackie have a complicated history. Jim - still using the name Bonifacia - found work as a waiter in Jackie's bar with the sole purpose of killing Alfeo de la Vaca, who was responsible for the murder of their parents. After having their revenge, Jim went on a run, aware that Jackie would want revenge for the death of her favorite husband. They meet again when Stede's crew comes to the Republic to ransom Officer Hornberry and Jim goes on a hunt for a dagger that used to belong to their father. Jackie catches them, but pretends not to recognize them in their disguise. Their paths meet again when the Nun insists Jim completes their quest, prompting them to return to her bar. They kidnap Geraldo and try to barter with his life, but Jackie kills him to take away Jim's bargaining chip. They get into a fight, but then realize there is no point in them being enemies. They share a drink and decide to be friends.

Trivia[]

• Their favorite color is teal, but originally Jim would be lying about this and their favorite color was going to be purple. Vico Ortiz says that they're happy this got changed because it can be interpreted that Jim's favorite color is teal because of Oluwande's teal earring.
• Despite Spanish being Vico Ortiz's first language, they were not asked to record Jim's dialogue for either of the two versions of the show's Spanish dubbing. Instead, the European Spanish dubbing has all of Jim's dialogue replaced, while the American Spanish dubbing leaves Ortiz's voice for any parts where Jim speaks Spanish and only replaces the English dialogue.^[1]
