Queer Pirate Rom-com Suitable for Older Teens
This is an LGBTQ+ centered romantic comedy on the high seas. It is set 1717, during the age of piracy, in the Caribbean. It uses comedy to explore some heavy themes, including toxic masculinity, internalized hom*ophobia, colonialism, and racism. What is unusual is that the humor never punches down. The heroes of this show are a racially mixed crew of LGBTQ+ pirates. The pirates never explicitly state their identities in any modern way. They just live their lives. This show contains violent elements, but there's not even the tiniest trace of anti-queer violence, and many different queer couples, including lesbians, gay men, and non-binary characters are shown having relationships which are important to the plot. They have a wide variety of body types and ethnicities. A central message of the show is that, by being brave enough to be open about who you are, you can find love and happiness. That makes this show a really important and empowering one for LGBTQ+ youth. That said, it contains elements that make it not suitable for younger viewers. These include: graphic violence (mostly of a theatrical/comedic style-- like geysers of blood), domestic violence, sexual humor. Several characters are involved in consensual non-monogamous relationships. There are frequent use of curses, as well as the use of the word "God" as a part of curses. There is cursing in Spanish as well. Adults drink, heavily. Adults smoke marijuana. Season two involves heavier violence, including a shooting, a character putting a gun to their head and threatening suicide. At one point a character strangles another. At another point a character cuts off another one's toe.At different points a character walks in on a couple who were clearly just having sex. Nothing explicit is shown on screen, but the jokes are based around sex, and characters talk about their sex lives. There is also heavy drinking, smoking, gambling, comedic nudity (no genitals or breasts, just naked people running about for comedic effect) and there are battle scenes. In one scene, a pencil drawing of a penis and testicl*s is briefly shown.

Watch it! Then watch it again and again til you can recite it! So fun.
This show is wonderful. Diverse, emotionally intelligent, and most of all hilarious. (There is a lot of swearing but not in a particularly ugly way). The other reviews said it better. Watch this show. As long as can handle a bit of cursing and some violence (less than any marvel movie) you’ll be treated to a wonderful show that will delight you and give you lots of quotable moments. I really love this show and watch it with my 14 yo. It’s lovely to see a show so full of a diverse group of people doing their thing and being accepted. A Lgbtq+ POC cast, discussions of mental health, what masculinity means , wealth, expectations. And all from pirates!

Beautiful romantic comedy
Knowing what kids see theses days, I believe this could be watched by younger teens, but I must say there are somewhat mentions of sex and a little it gore scenes, so just in case I rate it for 16 years old!I LOVED the show. The tension between characters, the plot, THE COMEDY. You end up falling in love with every character. And yes, it's gay, it's LGBTQ. Grow up, that doesn't make it a bad show. I think it has really beautiful representation of all kinds of love; sexual, platonic, romantic. I 100% recommend it.

Smart and funny romcom on the high seas
I usually don’t watch a TV series over and over but I’ve watched Our Flag Means Death six times. The show is like nothing I’ve ever seen before on American premier cable The ideal of the show is simple. A bored aristocrat leaves his wife and kids to become a pirate and hijinks ensue. Once Stede Bonnet meets Blackbeard , a fearsome Captain tired of pirating, in the third episode the course of the show turns from a pirate comedy to a romantic comedy. There is such great representation of differently abled people and people who are older. Everyone is able to find love despite their size or shape or age or color or orientation. It’s really difficult to put into words how much the show means to me but it’s just a perfect show.

Fun show for teens and adults
Very funny pirate rom-com with LGBTQ representation and subverted gender norms. Some violence, often offset by dark humor. Lots of swearing but less innuendo than most prime time shows so not that awkward to watch with your teens.
