Walmart has transitioned its management structure at the stores since 2019, towards a more team-based operating model. The new hierarchal structure is designed to give more ownership to junior members and teams, and allows for discovery & development of future leadership talents early on, through supervisory roles (team leaders) on the different teams.
The Current Walmart Management Structure
Market Manager
The Market Manager leads a group of multi-million dollar stores, and directly manages the Store Managers of those stores.
The annual salary range for the Market Manager role at Walmart starts at $140,000 plus equity
Store Manager
The Store Manager is the highest role at the store. He/she manages a multi-million dollar business and reports to the Market Manager.
The annual salary range for a Walmart Store Manager is $95,000 to $170,000.

Store Lead
The previous role of co-manager has transitioned into the role of Store Lead, who is more of a Store Manager in training. The person at this role is being prepared to become a Store Manager, and run his/her own store in the near future.
The annual salary range of a Store Lead at Walmart is $70,000 to $90,000.
Coach
The Coach is responsible for several departments at the store, and leads the teams under those departments, with the help of several Team Leads. The team leads manage smaller teams of retail sales associates.
The annual salary range for the Coach role at Walmart is $55,000 to $80,000.
In addition to the above leadership role there are also Specialty Area Managers, such as Asset Protection Manager and Car Center Managers, with annual salaries from $48,000 to $72,000.
New Management Development Programs
With the high competition over retail talent and all the challenges faced in retail recruitment to find and retain, especially, retail leadership talent, Walmart is piloting a new program called “College2Career” to attract future store leaders who are interested in starting a career in retail, straight out of college.
This programs introduced a new role into the management structure at Walmart stores, called “emerging coach”, with a starting salary of $65,000.
According to Walmart, emerging coaches can transition into store manager roles within 2 years.
