As we approach the busiest season of the year, we thought it might be a good time to offer a Personal Balance Check-in Exercise. This time of year many of us will find our schedules and well-being overloaded

By taking an inventory of your balance and well being now, you will be able to make a proactive approach to avoid obstacles and burnout in the future. This will help you feel confident, empowered, engaged and resilient.

THREE GREAT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF ABOUT BALANCE

Q:Where are my expectations at the moment (low, high, or just right?

Q: What are the three main actions you could take right now that would create the most impact on your well-being?

Q: What is the fuel you need for engagement – full on – flat out

As an entrepreneur, looking after my health is always #1 priority. I can’t function at the level that I need to if my health isn’t on form.

For me that fuel is good, uninterrupted sleep (minimum of 7 hours per night), morning walks with daily gratitudes with my dog Oscar and scheduled play times where I get to go hike in the forest with friends or mess around in the skatepark on my rollerskates.

Q: What does balance look like for you in terms of emotional and physical optimization

I think everyone’s balance is different. When I’m in the zone, I’ll happily put my head down and problem solve til 2am in the morning. But then I shift everything a bit on my schedule to make sure I get all the other things I need to fuel me. Scheduling the important stuff first – like exercise, sleep & time with friends & loved ones – and then working around that helps me to feel fulfilled and not drained.

Q: Is balance equal parts of everything or a sliding scale and sum of the parts

I think balance, like everything in an entrepreneurs life, changes constantly. What worked 6 months ago, may not work for you now. To be a good entrepreneur, business-partner, life-partner is a continual process in self-awareness and understanding. If you don’t understand yourself, and your real, true needs then how can you know what balance looks like for you?

It brings us right to the coaching questions of ‘what is your purpose?’ and ‘what does it mean to you?’ Whether you have set your own expectations or others have imposed goals on you, there needs to be a strong connection and meaning to your work.

Burnout is not a simple result of long hours. The cynicism, depression, and lethargy of burnout can occur when you’re not in control of how you carry out your job, when you’re working toward goals that don’t resonate with you, and when you lack social support. If you don’t tailor your responsibilities to match your true calling, or at least take a break once in a while, you could face a mountain of mental and physical health problems.”
