If you’re looking for a phone number anymore, forget calling 441 or the operator. According to a notice posted by AT&T, there is a reason why we will no longer need operators to man the 411 number and to be quite honest, when’s the last time you used it.
With new technology, there just doesn’t seem to be a need any longer for a service that maybe 20 to 30 years ago was so valuable. A job that called for a relaxed, yet clear and concise speaking voice…but those days will soon be gone all together.
The Mike & Carla Morning Showactually put out a call for those that did perform the job as “operator” whether it be on a national level or even local working at a hotel. The job it self seemed to be quite interesting from those that we talked to. The numbers customers would ask for and some of the information some thought they could get if indeed they call 411.
However, beginning sometime later this month, as mentioned above, according to a notice by AT&T, customers with digital landlines will no longer be able to dial 411 or 0. Now this isn’t really surprising since just a couple of years ago, AT&T ended operator services for cell phones.
For other carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, and other major carriers, they still offer the service, but for there is a fee.
Did you know that operator services like 411 have been around for 100 years, so why are they ending now? An AT&T spokesperson said, “Nearly all of these customers have internet access to look up this information.” So basically what they’re saying that you really don’t need an operator anymore because you can just GOOGLE IT yourself.
In 2021, there were fewer than 4,000 telephone operators, down from a peak of 420,000 in the 1970s. But there ARE still people who call the operator. In 2019, the FCC estimated that 71 million calls annually were placed to 411. So see…we still might just need this service! But you need to hear what happened when The M&C Morning Show call 411 this morning…just take a couple of minutes and listen to the segment from this morning and enjoy!

Automatic, or dial, systems were developed in the 1920s to reduce labor costs as usage increased, and to ensure privacy to the customer. As phone systems became more sophisticated, less direct intervention by the telephone operator was necessary to complete calls.
In 2021, there were fewer than 4,000 telephone operators, down from a peak of around 420,000 in the 1970s, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. But there are still people who call the operator and request directory help.
If you dial "0", "00", 411, NPA+555-1212, or 555-1212 on or after January 1, 2023, you may receive a message letting you know that Operator and Directory Assistance can't be accessed. Addresses and numbers can still be located using online services, such as: Internet search engines, including Google®, Bing®, and Yahoo!
In the United States cellular market, AT&T announced its withdrawal of 411 service for its wireless phone customers, effective November 1, 2022. AT&T also announced it will discontinue landline 411 services in 21 states starting January 1, 2023.
The US Federal Communications Commission is phasing out requirements for phone companies to provide landline services (called Plain Old Telephone Service, or POTS) across the country. As a result, more homes and business offices are being built with ethernet jacks rather than phone jacks.
And those distractions take up so much of students' time and mental energy that they often stall learning. A body of research backs this up. A 2016 study of schools in England, for example, showed banning cellphones can have academic benefits, particularly for students who struggle in school.
Most phone companies allow you to access directory assistance service by dialing “411.” Other directory assistance services require a different dialing pattern such as 555-1212, a toll free number or a number that starts with “10-10.” Charges will vary significantly, check the rate before using any directory assistance ...
Human operators were no longer needed. The profession took decades to die out completely, as AT&T switched gradually, exchange by exchange. But eventually, automation killed off the telephone operator as a profession, by around 1978.
Your phone should automatically switch to 2G when no other mobile signal is available, which allows you to make calls and send text messages, but not to use the internet (2G doesn't support data services). However, it's worth tweaking your network settings to prioritise 2G when you can't connect to a 4G or 5G network.
Party lines are still used today, though rarely. These areas must be built for a distance-limited loop, like camps or small communities, all places that are just a bit too rural for big infrastructure investment even today.
611 is an abbreviated dialing telephone number in the North American Numbering Plan, implemented by many telephone companies for reporting troubles with telephone service, or with a payphone. It is an N11 code, which are reserved from assignment as area codes or central office codes, for use in special services.
Starting this month, AT&T customers with digital telephones can no longer dial 411 to get information or dial 0 to get an operator. We're seeing the beg...
The convenience and portability offered by cell phones over time rendered the need for payphones obsolete, consigning them to a nostalgic chapter in the history of communication technology. During the early 2000s, all major phone companies withdrew from the payphone market leaving phone booths without a purpose.
Several number combinations are not possible. For instance, your area code can't be 911, so the total number of possible phone numbers is a little more than 5 billion, and more than half of those have been given out, according to How Stuff Works.
1 Your phone needs to be restarted. 2 You're in a place with bad cell service. 3 Your phone is in airplane mode. 4 Your phone isn't connecting to the best signal.
(Phone numbers are still one of the more secure channels, which is why we keep using them. It could just be better.) Today, our best solution for authenticating phone numbers with phone calls is STIR/SHAKEN, which is designed to protect against caller-ID spoofing.
