Tax Day: Important 1099 Tax Deadlines to Know — Stride Blog (2024)

If you're an independent contractor or someone who works for yourself, you're probably going to be receiving a 1099 form pretty soon. That means some tax deadlines are coming up. Don't worry, we've rounded up all the important dates you need to know about so you don’t miss any.

January 29, 2024: The IRS begins accepting tax returns.

In general, the IRS starts accepting tax return filings towards the end of January.

This year, the IRS announced that January 29 is the official start of tax season, which means this is the first day you’ll be able to file your taxes.

January 31, 2024: Your 1099 forms are delivered.

You should receive your 1099 forms (and W-2 forms if you also receive income from an employer) around this date. If you receive your forms digitally, you should have them by January 31. If you receive them by mail, they may arrive a little after that, but companies must postmark (mail) them by the end of January.

You’ll need these forms to complete your tax return, so keep an eye out for them.

Relevant forms: 1099-NEC, 1099-K, 1099-G, etc.

April 15, 2024: Your 2023 tax return or an extension is due.

If you e-file your taxes (file them online), April 15 is the last day to file. If you mail in your return, a tax filing is considered filed on time as long as you postmark it by April 15.

If you don’t feel like you are going to be ready to file by Tax Day and need an extension, make sure to file for one before this date with Form 4868. An extension will grant you six more months (until October 15, 2024) to file your return.

Keep in mind this is an extension to file your taxes, but it won’t give you an extension to pay your taxes if you owe them this year. The IRS recommends estimating what you owe and paying that amount by April 15 even if you file an extension. This will help minimize any penalties that you would incur if you didn’t pay anything toward your taxes by April 15.

Relevant forms: 1040, Schedule SE, Schedule C, or any other forms required for your income returns.

October 15, 2024: The final deadline for those who filed for a Form 4868 extension.

Received an extension? You need to file before this deadline.

Relevant forms: 1040, Schedule SE, Schedule C, or any other forms required for your income returns.
