Important information to keep you safe online
'Number spoofing' scams
Fraudsters are increasingly using a technique known as number spoofing to trick people into believing they are speaking to a trusted organisation such as their bank.
They do this by making a legitimate phone number appear on your caller ID display. They then draw your attention to the number on the display and use this as proof of identity in order to disguise the fraud.
The scam is a variation on 'vishing,' — a more common telephone fraud where criminals pose as bank staff or other trusted officials such as police officers, to persuade their victims to tell them information such as their PIN or banking passwords. Once they have this information they can use it to transfer or withdraw money from your account.
Alternatively, some fraudsters will attempt to trick customers into sending money to other accounts.
We take your security very seriously and will do all we can to help stop fraud. Please take a look at the information below, which is designed to help keep your account safe.
Know Fraud, No Fraud
Virgin Money is fully supportive of the ‘Know Fraud, No Fraud’ campaign – eight rules designed to keep you and your account safe and secure.
Virgin Money will never:
- Call or email to ask you for your full PIN number or any online banking passwords.
- Send someone to your home to collect cash, bank cards or anything else.
- Ask you to email or text personal or banking information.
- Send an email with a link to a page which asks you to enter your online banking sign-in details.
- Ask you to authorise the transfer of funds to a new account or hand over cash.
- Call to advise you to buy diamonds, land or other commodities.
- Ask you to carry out a test transaction online.
- Provide banking services through any mobile app other than our own official apps.
We will also never ask you to check the number showing on your telephone’s display matches our registered telephone number. The display cannot be trusted, as the number showing can be altered.
If you are given any of these instructions, it is a fraudulent approach. Please hang up, wait five minutes to clear the line, or use a different phone line where possible, then contact us immediately on 0345 607 6991. We are here from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and 10am to 3pm on Sundays.
