HOW TO FIND YOUR ROLEX SERIAL NUMBER
WATCH CASE
The Rolex Serial number is engraved on every watch, and is unique to each Rolex produced. The number can be found between the two case lugs at the 6 o’clock position. In most circ*mstances the watch bracelet will need to be removed in order to see this. It is recommended that bracelet removal is done by a trained professional to avoid any damage to your watch case or bracelet.
ROLEX PAPERS
If you still have your Rolex papers from purchase, the serial number should also be printed on this document. Once found you can use the Rolex Serial number checker table below to find your watch production year. This is extremely useful if you are looking to get a Rolex Valuation.
WATCH REHAUT
On newer Rolex models you can find the serial number engraved on the the flange around the watch face behind the sapphire at 6 o'clock position, technically named the 'rehaut'.

Can you use Rolex serial number to find the age of a watch after 2010?
Prior to 2010, Rolex used a serial number system with a letter prefix, or prior to 1988 serial numbers were all numeric. These serials could be decoded to indicate the year of manufacture, making it easy to determine the age of a watch. In 2010, the system was changed to a random sequence of numbers and letters, making it more difficult to determine the age of a watch based on the serial number alone. Despite this change, it is still possible to determine the approximate age of a Rolex watch manufactured after 2010 using the serial number, although additional information is required.
You can use the Rolex warranty card to determine the age of a Rolex watch manufactured after 2010. The warranty card should show the date of purchase, which is a good indication of the age of the watch.
Another option is to consult a reputable dealer or contact Rolex directly and provide the serial number of your watch. Rolex keeps records of all watches produced and can tell you the approximate year of manufacture based on your watch’s serial number.
Can a Rolex serial number be used to prove the authenticity of a watch?
The Rolex serial number can be used as one of several factors to prove the authenticity of a Rolex watch. The serial number is a unique identifier that Rolex assigns to each watch they manufacture. It is engraved on the case of the watch between the lugs at the 6 of the clock position or laser engraved on the watch Rehaut (after 2005).
However, it is important to note that while the serial number is a helpful tool, it should not be used as the sole factor in determining authenticity. There are many counterfeit Rolex watches on the market that have serial numbers that are either fake or have been altered to match a legitimate watch. It should also be noted that Rolex warranty cards/papers can also be replicated to match the serial number on a fake watch.
Is a Rolex without a serial number fake?
If your Rolex watch does not have a serial number, it is highly likely that the watch is not genuine.
If the serial number is not visible, it may be due to wear and tear on a vintage watch, or it may be covered in dirt. However, it’s important to carefully examine between the lugs to see if there are any signs of engraving, as this can also be an indicator of authenticity.
In any case, the absence of a serial number is a red flag, and you should have the watch evaluated by a reputable dealer or appraiser to determine its authenticity.
Can I use a Rolex serial number to check if the watch is stolen?
Yes, you can use a Rolex serial number to check if a watch has been reported as stolen. If the watch has been reported, the serial number will be registered in a database that can be accessed by law enforcement and other authorized parties.
One way to check if a Rolex watch has been reported as stolen is by using the service provided by The Watch Register (www.thewatchregister.com). This service allows you to search a database of stolen watch reports by entering the watch’s serial number. If the watch has been reported, you will be able to see the details of the theft report and take appropriate action.
Can you value my Rolex by just the serial number?
No, we cannot value your Rolex watch by just the serial number alone. However, if the watch was manufactured before 2010, the serial number can be used to determine the age of the watch, which could impact its valuation. In addition to the serial number, the model number of the watch is also needed to accurately determine its value.
To get an accurate valuation of a Rolex watch, it’s important to take into consideration factors such as the model number, condition, rarity, and provenance.
My Rolex serial number does not match the paperwork
If your Rolex serial number does not match the paperwork, it’s not an uncommon issue, particularly with older watches. It’s also worth noting that the importance of paperwork wasn’t always fully realized in the 1960s-1980s.
However, if the watch is genuine and the serial number on the papers does not match the watch, then the watch would typically be classified as being sold “without papers”. This means that the watch does not have the original paperwork that was issued at the time of sale. While this can have some impact on the value of the watch, it’s worth noting that the most important factor in determining the value of a Rolex is typically the watch itself, rather than the paperwork.
Can the serial number be used to track the history of a Rolex watch?
While the serial number of a Rolex watch can provide some information about the age and model of the watch, it cannot be used to track the complete history of the watch.
However, there are some instances where the serial number may be useful in determining the history of a Rolex watch. For example, if the watch was originally sold by an authorized Rolex dealer, the dealer may have a record of the sale that includes the watch’s serial number. Additionally, if the watch has been serviced by Rolex, the company may have a record of the watch that includes its serial number and service history.
Can a Rolex Serial be used to check if a watch is stolen?
Rolex watches all feature a unique serial engraved on the watch, either between the lugs, on the rehaut, or on the interior of the case back on some vintage models. Stolen watches reported to the police, and with a crime number can be logged with Rolex direct within their own database. This database generally isn’t accessible by the public, but the watch can be held if it is sent to Rolex for service by a new owner.
In the UK you can check against the The Watch Register, which is a third party database of stolen watch serials. You can run a paid search using the watch brand, model number, and serial number to check to see if the watch has been registered as stolen.
Receiving a ‘No Match’ result on a register search isn’t a 100% conclusion as it does depend on the previous owner reporting the Rolex watch as stolen in the first place.
