Is CGC grading worth it? ›

So, does the company matter? In short, yes. 90% of comics are graded using CGC or CBCS, and among those two, CGC has the better reputation and generally higher values due to that reputation. CBCS is mostly comparable, just less popular, so many collectors prefer CGC-graded comics.

CGC grades most comic books that fit within the following dimensions: 10-1/2" tall x 7-5/8" wide x 1/4" thick (except comics with hard covers or jeweled covers).

CGC and CBCS also have very similar grading standards when it comes to identifying flaws. The best way to explain this is that a comic that is graded by CGC will likely be the same grade if sent to CBCS. The slight differences are when you have lower-grade comics.

CBCS was founded by CGC's former head grader. The two companies kinda have their moments of light grading and tough grading but as a whole are largely consistent and reliable with grading.

PGX is the best if you need cheaper pricing and faster turnarounds. Unfortunately, their reputation still took a hit in the community, so a PGX-graded book will likely fetch less on sale than the same book.

But in general, turnaround time is largely based on volume of submissions and staffing. They are not actively pressing your specific book for 30 days. They can't always control how many books come in on a given day and for what service. They can't control if two staffs call in sick on the same day.

Having comics graded increases their value, which again, can be extremely lucrative. However, comics packed in the traditional plastic sleeves also sell for large amounts. Definitely saw a guy drop $2000 in cash at Heroes Con for a non-graded comic. Many go for much more.
