There are zero indicators a certain Pokemon is a Ditto through the map or at the start of an encounter. After catching a Pokemon, it will then emerge to show its true form. Surprise! It was actually a Ditto!

Ditto is an elusive Pokémon in Pokémon Go, as it disguises itself and you can't actually just catch one straight-up. In order to find Ditto, you'll want to find the Pokémon that it currently disguises itself as. For example, you may see a Diglett, and it'll stay a Diglett once you tap on it, but it's secretly a Ditto.

There isn't anything physically distinguishing to give away that a Pokémon is a Ditto. However, if a Pokémon, that is typically an easy catch, is giving you a hard time, it could be a Ditto. This is because Ditto has a lower catch rate, but it'll disguise its catch ring colors with the Pokémon Species it is posing as.

You can also increase your chances by using Incense, Lure Mods, and Pokémon Go Plus. Anything you would normally use to catch more Pokémon will also increase your chances of finding and catching Ditto.
