Does PayPal buyer protection really work? ›

Protection you can count on. PayPal's Buyer Protection program entitles you to reimbursem*nt for the full purchase price of the item plus the original shipping costs you paid, if any when you don't receive your item from a seller, or when you receive an item, but the item isn't what you ordered.

Ineligible Items and Transactions

Real estate, including residential property. Vehicles, including, but not limited to, motor vehicles, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, aircraft, and boats, except for personally portable light vehicles used for recreational purposes like bicycles and wheeled hoverboards.

We don't reveal your financial information to sellers. And if something goes wrong with an order and your transaction qualifies for Buyer Protection, we'll reimburse you for the full purchase price plus any original shipping costs.

If you're unable to resolve a transaction related issue directly with a seller, you must follow our online dispute resolution process through the Resolution Centre to pursue a claim under PayPal Buyer Protection. You may also file a claim (Step 2 below) by calling us and speaking to an agent.

How do I claim money back from PayPal? First, contact the seller for a refund. You can open a dispute in the resolution center if the seller doesn't respond or refuses to issue a refund. You have 180 days from the transaction date to file a dispute.

For example, when you use PayPal to send a payment, the recipient doesn't receive sensitive financial details like your credit card or bank account number. You don't have to worry about paying someone online. Additionally, when you pay with PayPal on any website, you're covered by PayPal Purchase Protection.

What's not Covered? Intangible items like services, real estate, motorized vehicles (of any kind), custom made items, travel tickets, industrial machinery (for manufacturing), prepaid or gift cards, anything you buy in person, or items that violate PayPal's policies or eBay's policies.

My order never arrived

If your order never shows up and the seller can't provide proof of shipment or delivery, you'll get a full refund.

To be eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection you must meet all of the following requirements: Have a PayPal account in good standing. Pay for the eligible item from your PayPal account. Attempt to contact the seller to resolve your issue directly before filing a claim through the PayPal Resolution Centre.

When a transaction is disputed, the seller can still interact with the buyer to try to work out a mutually-agreeable resolution. Once the dispute has been escalated to claim status, PayPal becomes more directly involved, reviewing the buyer's complaint and the seller's evidence in order to reach a decision.

If an eligible item that you've bought online doesn't arrive, or doesn't match the seller's description, PayPal's Buyer Protection may reimburse you for the full amount of the item plus postage. Buyer Protection can cover your eligible online purchases, on eBay or on any other website, when you use PayPal.

When you pay for an eligible item from your PayPal account and you don't receive your order, or it shows up significantly different than described, you may be eligible for a refund under PayPal's Purchase Protection program.
