To make sure you get access to all the desired web content, we recommend you to take one more step besides setting up KeepSolid SmartDNS on your router – block Google public DNS servers.
To block Google DNS, you need to set up static routes on your router. The majority of routers allow you to do so and the process is basically the same:
- First, log in to your router. Most routers use 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.254 as their IP addresses.
- After you’ve logged in, you get to the setup page. Find the option Advanced Routing.
- Fill out the fields as shown below:
Route Name: enter a custom name, for example Public DNS
Destination IP: 8.8.8.8
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Gateway: it is the IP address of your router. In some cases, you may need to change the last digit of the router’s IP address, for example instead of using 192.168.1.1, use 192.168.1.2. - Press Save Settings.
- Repeat the steps 2-4, but this time indicate 8.8.4.4. in the field Destination IP (in step 3).

How to block Google DNS: verify the setup
After you finish setting up static routes to block Google DNS public server addresses, you can run the following ping test to make sure Google DNS is successfully blocked:
1. If you’re using a PC, open the program Command Prompt. In case you’re on a Mac, open the Terminal (you can find it in Applications > Utilities).
2. Write the following in the command line and press enter: ping 8.8.8.8
3. In case you get Request Timed Out as a result of this test, it means that you’ve successfully blocked Google DNS.
