Atreus has become a big part of the story since the reboot of God of War back in 2018. As the son of Kratos, and now believed to be Loki, the character has a lot of room to grow in the coming chapter, God of War: Ragnarök. And, because quite a bit of time has passed since God of War 2018, Atreus has grown a little already. But exactly how much time has passed since that first game, and just exactly how old is Atreus in God of War: Ragnarök? Here's what you need to know.
According to the novelization surrounding God of War, Atreus was roughly 11 years old when the events of God of War 2018 took place. Now, because most of Fimbulwinter has passed before the events of God of War: Ragnarök, we can guess that Atreus has aged at least three years since that first modern game. This would make the secondary character of the newest game right around 14 years old, give or take a few months.
Because he's only 14, Atreus is still very young, and thus still has a lot to learn, as is discussed in Newsweek's God of War: Ragnarök review. But being that young doesn't make him useless. In fact, Kratos has spent the last three years of Atreus' life training him to be a better, stronger fighter. And, because Atreus has learned that he, too, is a god, he's able to embrace that fully in God of War: Ragnarök.
This aging also makes sense as Atreus looks and sounds older, though not by much. It isn't like ten or 20 years have passed since the first game, which would have aged Atreus significantly more. And, because we know that Ragnarök is coming in the newest chapter of the game—Sony Santa Monica has said time and time again that this chapter will end the Norse portion of Kratos and Atreus' story—then we at least have a little bit of a timeline to go off of.
Of course, even with Atreus being just 14, there's still plenty for him to take part in within the game. There are plenty of things to encounter throughout the nine realms, and players will no doubt find themselves farming for Hacksilver and even learning to master the parry mechanic so that they can survive for longer periods of time in the more difficult combat scenarios found within God of War: Ragnarök.
This also means that Kratos is now three years older, too, though defining his age is a bit less precise, as it's never fully outlined in the previous games.
