Whether as playable characters (the Traveler) or NPCs, Aether and Lumine are a part of Genshin Impact’s cast without a strictly defined age. Like other characters in the game’s impressive cast, there are clues that allow fans to make educated guesses as to Aether and Lumine’s real age. Although they appear young, they are some of the older characters in the game. Players are given the option of a male or female protagonist at the start of Genshin Impact. The character left unchosen will be their twin sibling.
Aether is the twin brother for those who choose the female character, whereas Lumine is the twin sister. The two siblings traveled across the universe until they were stopped and captured by an Unknown God, setting the current events into motion. As the protagonist, players can name Aether whatever they’d like, but Lumine will still refer to him as “Aether,” while an NPC Aether will refer to the female protagonist as Lumine. This gives them both a sense of solidified character despite the protagonist’s spoken lines being chosen by the players themselves.

Aether & Lumine's Approximate Age In Genshin Impact
The Siblings Are At Least 500 Years Old
Although Aether and Lumine have a youthful appearance, which fans speculate is approximately in the 15 to 17-year age range, they have been alive for far, far longer. They both witnessed the destruction of Khaenri’ah, otherwise known as the Cataclysm, which occurred 500 years before the main events. Although one of the Travelers was placed into a deep sleep during this time, their sibling managed to escape the imprisonment, and they both still retain a youthful appearance despite awakening at different times. These twins are one of numerous Genshin Impact characters whose true age doesn’t match how young they look.
It’s unclear just how long either of the Traveler siblings was alive before being captured by the Unknown God. With what Genshin Impact fans know so far of its ever-expanding story, Aether and Lumine are at the very least over 500 years old.
Do Aether & Lumine Age In Genshin Impact?
The Characters Have Been Exploring Teyvat For Some Time
One of the main discussions among the community revolves around whether or not Aether, Lumine, and other characters are getting older as time passes during their adventures. HoYoverse has not publicly addressed this, but like many live-service games, time does seemingly pass, even if the characters in that universe do not seem to age physically. Characters’ birthdays are celebrated every year, hinting at a full year going by and, consequently, these characters getting older.
Four years have passed since Genshin Impact’s release, and it is safe to assume all known characters so far are four years older than at launch.
This means that both Aether and Lumine are at least four years older than they were at the start of the game. This, obviously, has not resulted in a change to their design – and it is likely it will not be the case anytime soon. The same can be said about all other characters in the game, even those that would be more likely subject to age physically, such as the child-like characters like Klee, Diona, and Yaoyao. While birthday celebrations occur, they do not have an impact on characters’ ages because no one’s age is known.
Instead, it is more of an excuse to reward players with minor gifts and draw attention to each character. Time does pass in the game’s universe but each character’s age does not play an important part in the story. Childish characters like Klee will likely remain childish forever, while adolescent-written characters like Xingqiu will also likely remain like that as the game presses forward. Most Nations of Teyvat have already been explored in Genshin Impact, but there is still a lot to cover as the game gets ready to venture deeper into Khaenri’ah.
