~ The Unknown God confronting the Travelers. |
The Sustainer of Heavenly Principles, also referred to as the Unknown God or simply the God, is the overarching antagonist of the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.
Presented as an enigmatic mysterious goddess with power over space and reality, the Unknown God is considered as the ultimate threat to the Traveler who keeps the realities separated and untouched by mortals from other universes. She is also the first antagonist to appear in the game, more precisely in the introduction scene of the game. She is responsible for taking away the Traveler twins' ability to travel between worlds, then trapping them in separate worlds. After using her powers to transform the Traveler's twin sibling (depending on the player choice they could be the sister or brother), she banishes the remaining player Traveler to the world of Teyvat.
It's speculated that the Unknown God is the ruler of Celestia and therefore the deity whom all others must answer to, in addition to potentially being responsible for the destruction of both Khaenri'ah and the Travelers' world (which may have led the siblings to travel across other worlds) as her cubes can be seen destroying Lumine's world in the game teaser, although this may have been a portrayal of the destruction of Khaenri'ah. Although, there may be other figures who stand for the "Heavenly Principles" who have yet to be introduced that she may be commanded by.
The Unknown God is voiced by Dian Tao in Chinese and by Christie Cate in English.

Appearance[]
Though she was far older, the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles had the outward appearance of a young woman with a tall, slender body. She had long, free-flowing cloud-white hair that floated unnaturally behind her head. Her amber eyes both had a small line going horizontally across their pupils.
Personality[]
The Unknown God was an arrogant supremacist who looked down on mortals due to them being what she perceived to be lesser beings. She presented herself as merciless and emotionless when dealing with mortals, as if she were handling mere pests.
Biography[]
"The Sustainer of Heavenly Principles" was one of the gods that presided over the continent of Teyvat. Her responsibility was seemingly to ensure adherence to the "Heavenly Principles," a set of unclear divine laws that mortals and gods alike had to abide by unless they sought retribution. Eventually, an advanced human nation called the Kingdom of Khaenri'ah rebelled against the Heavenly Principles and was destroyed by the gods. A pair of twins who travelled across the stars were horrified by Khaenri'ah's destruction and tried to leave Teyvat. However, the Sustainer barred their path.
The Sustainer introduced herself to the Travelers and proclaimed that humanity's arrogation would end. The god tried to ensnare the Travelers with her power, but they avoided her attack and prepared to fight. The Travelers weaved through the Sustainer's spatial cubes and tried to strike the god down, though she blocked their combined attack. The Sustainer then absorbed both siblings using her cubes, and sent them down to Teyvat with their world-travelling powers stripped from them.

Trivia[]
- The Unknown God is named "Asmoday" in the game files of Genshin Impact. Like the names of the other gods of Teyvat, the name Asmoday was derived from a demon detailed in the Ars Goetia, one of the five books that comprised the demonology grimoire The Lesser Key of Solomon. Asmodeus was ranked thirty-second among the seventy-two demons described in the book and was one of the nine Kings of Hell. Commanding seventy-two demonic legions, Asmodeus was a powerful demon who possessed a golden seal and sat upon an infernal dragon.
- The Sustainer of Heavenly Principles was likely based off of Herrscher of the Void, an antagonist in the video game Honkai Impact 3rd which, like Genshin Impact, was developed by MiHoYo. Both the Sustainer and Herrscher had long white hair, amber eyes, and wore predominately black and white clothing. Additionally, both characters were voiced by the same voice actresses in their Chinese and Japanese versions, Dian Tao and Rie Kugimiya respectively. According to a developer livestream hosted prior to the release of Genshin Impact, the similarities are seemingly intentional.
- Dian Tao and Christie Cate, the Chinese and English voice actresses for the Sustainer respectively, both voice playable characters in Genshin Impact. Tao voices Hu Tao and Cate voices Qiqi.
