How does foreign exchange with currency work? ›

Foreign exchange, also known as forex, is the conversion of one country's currency into another. The value of any particular currency is determined by market forces related to trade, investment, tourism, and geopolitical risk.

At N26, all our accounts feature free card payments worldwide — as often as you like and with no foreign transaction fees. N26 You and Metal account holders can withdraw cash for free at foreign ATMs, while customers with Standard and Smart accounts are charged a fixed 1.7% conversion fee on the withdrawal amount.

What Is a Forex Account? Forex accounts give investors and traders the ability to trade all major currency pairs and some emerging market pairs. It provides access to the global currency market, enabling participants to buy, sell, and speculate on various currency pairs.

When you exchange foreign currency through your bank or any money changer, you are required to provide them with you KYC (Know Your Customer) documentation. RBI has instructed all banking institutions and authorised money changers to ensure the customer's identity and address proof.

Head to your bank or credit union before you leave to avoid paying ATM transaction costs. You may even receive a better exchange rate. Credit unions and banks will exchange your dollars into a foreign currency before and after your trip when you have a checking or savings account with them.

If you don't know the exchange rate, you can use the following simple currency conversion calculation to find it: take your starting amount (original currency) and divide it by ending amount (new currency) = exchange rate.

Simply open your N26 app, go to the 'Home' screen, and tap on 'Send Money. ' Then tap the '+' symbol on the top right and select 'Foreign currency transfer. ' Enter the transfer amount and choose the currency to get a quote. Add and review your recipient's bank details, and confirm the transfer!
