Preventing Algae Growth in IBC Totes
Algae growth in IBC totes not only makes the water unappealing and unfit for certain uses but also requires time and effort to clean and remove it for further use of the IBC. Here are some methods to prevent IBC tote algae growth:
- Light Protection: Blocking light is the simplest and most effective way to inhibit algae growth. This can be achieved by using covers or wraps specifically designed for IBC totes, (and other methods listed below). Such IBC covers provide total light and UV protection and effectively prohibit algae growth.
- Use Solid Colored Totes: Choosing IBC totes that are solid black in color can help limit the amount of light getting in and reduce the chance of algae growth. Note that a black IBC tote may not be entirely effective in fully eliminating sunlight penetration on its own.
- Painting: While paint can crack as an IBC tote expands and contracts from heating and cooling, some DIY users have found success in painting their totes to keep light out.
- Tarping or Cloth Covering: Using a black cloth or tarp to cover the IBC tote is another method that can be used to block light and limit algae growth.
- Black Plastic Wrap: Using black plastic wrap, as can often be found at hardware stores and online, is a popular and frequently used option to block light from reaching inside an IBC tote and preventing algae from growing.
Without proper prevention methods, water IBC totes can allow algae growth due to their translucent design and sunlight exposure. By using the effective strategies presented here, you can maintain the quality of the water, or rainwater, stored in your IBC tote.
