Card Controls Questions | Wells Fargo (2024)

Card controls

Why would I want to turn my card status to off?

If you have misplaced your card, turning it off will prevent new transactions from being approved while you try to find it, including purchases, ATM activity, and digital card number transactions. However, transactions that are flagged as previously authorized recurring payments, credits, refunds, and reversals may be approved while your card is turned off.

If I turn my card off, does it turn off all cards linked to the account, such as those issued to a joint accountholder or authorized user?

For debit cards, turning off your card will not stop transactions using other cards linked to your deposit account. For credit cards, turning off your card will turn off all cards associated with your credit card account.

What is a Transaction Control?

Setting a transaction control to on or off can allow or prohibit certain card transaction types to be processed.

What does it mean to turn off transactions outside the United States?

This means that transactions you make outside the 50 United States and the District of Columbia at physical stores or ATMs using your card or digital card number will not be processed while this control is off. Transactions made via phone call, mail or online with international merchants may still be processed. Turning off transactions outside the United States will not affect transactions you make at physical stores or ATMs within the 50 United States and the District of Columbia.

Currently, the transaction control outside the United States is only available for debit and prepaid cards.

Can I turn my card off and still use my associated digital card numbers for transactions?

No, while your card is off, any transactions attempted using your associated digital card numbers will not be processed.

Digital card numbers and wallets

What is a digital card number?

For your security, cards in digital wallets are assigned a digital card number for making transactions using your device. This number is different from the card number located on your physical plastic card. If you have a digital wallet on more than one device, different digital card numbers will be assigned to each device.

What types of digital card numbers might display?

Digital cards that are associated with your debit, prepaid, or consumer credit card and loaded onto devices such as mobile phones, watches or tablets may display.

What can I do to manage my digital card numbers in online or mobile?

In most cases, digital cards numbers can be suspended as well as reactivated, if the suspension was requested through Wells Fargo and not the digital wallet provider.

What happens when I suspend my digital card number?

If your digital card number is suspended, it means you can’t use it for any transactions. You may want to suspend your digital card number if you’ve temporarily misplaced your device that holds your digital wallet and you need time to look for it.

If you want to reactivate your digital card number, you must use the same method used to suspend your digital card number. For example, if you suspended your digital card number through your device service provider (e.g., Samsung, Apple®), you must reactivate it through this means. If you contacted Wells Fargo to suspend your digital card number, please visit Card Controls to reactivate it or contact us for assistance.

What happens when I reactivate my digital card number?

When your digital card number is reactivated, you can resume using your digital card number for transactions. You will also receive an email that confirms your digital card numbers have been reactivated.

Recurring payments

What is a recurring payment?

A recurring payment occurs when you have made at least 3 payments to the same merchant or service provider in the past 12 months through Wells Fargo Online® Bill Pay or you have authorized a merchant or service provider to take payment from your checking account or debit, prepaid, or credit card on a regular basis. As an example, some gym memberships or monthly insurance billings may be set up as recurring payments.

How do I stop recurring payments to merchants or service providers with whom I no longer do business?

Please contact the merchant or service provider directly to request changes or cancellations to recurring payments.

Turning off your card is not a replacement for reporting your card lost or stolen. Contact us immediately if you believe that unauthorized transactions have been made. Turning your card off will not stop card transactions presented as recurring transactions or the posting of refunds, reversals, or credit adjustments to your account. Any digital card numbers linked to the card will also be turned off. For debit cards, turning off your card will not stop transactions using other cards linked to your deposit account. For credit cards, turning off your card will turn off all cards associated with your credit card account. Availability may be affected by your mobile carrier’s coverage area. Your mobile carrier's message and data rates may apply.

Terms and conditions apply. Some (but not all) digital wallets require your device to be NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled and to have the separate wallet app available. Your mobile carrier’s message and data rates may apply.
