Bible Gateway Deuteronomy 34 :: NIV (2024)

Deuteronomy 34
1
Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land--from Gilead to Dan,
2
all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, [1]
3
the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar.
4
Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, `I will give it to your descendants.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it."
5
And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said.
6
He buried him [2] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is.
7
Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.
8
The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.
9
Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit [3] of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.
10
Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
11
who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt--to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land.
12
For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
  1. [2] That is, the Mediterranean
  2. [6] Or He was buried
  3. [9] Or Spirit

    FAQs

What is the meaning of Deuteronomy 34? ›

Deuteronomy 34 recounts a major transitional period in biblical Israel's history. In the final chapter of the book of Deuteronomy, God's servant Moses has died, but God did not leave the people leaderless. God appointed Joshua son of Nun as Moses' successor to guide the next generation into the promised land.

Where in the Bible is Moses' death? ›

Following on the very concise rendering of Moses' death in Deuteronomy 34:5 ('And there, Moses, the servant of YHWH, died in the land of Moab, according to the word of YHWH') – it does not seem to be much more than a fait divers – verse 6 immediately continues by narrating Moses' burial.

What happens to Moses in the Bible? ›

After the Ten Plagues, Moses led the Exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt and across the Red Sea, after which they based themselves at Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. After 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses died on Mount Nebo at the age of 120, within sight of the Promised Land.

What did God say to Moses before he died? ›

Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, `I will give it to your descendants. ' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it." And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said.

What does Deuteronomy teach us about God? ›

In Deuteronomy, God warned them, saying, “You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah. You must diligently obey the commands of the Lord your God — all the laws and decrees he has given you,” (Deuteronomy 6:15-17). Faith is nothing without obedience.

    Deuteronomy 18:9-12 The Message (MSG)

Don't practice divination, sorcery, fortunetelling, witchery, casting spells, holding séances, or channeling with the dead. People who do these things are an abomination to GOD.

Why couldn't Moses go to heaven? ›

Rather, it's about Moses' intentional choice to ignore God's word. Remember, Moses is not an average person. He's God's chosen representative. The closer you are to Yahweh (both metaphorically and, in Moses' and Aaron's case, literally), the higher the stakes of responsibility.

Who went to heaven without dying? ›

Sacred Scripture teaches that Enoch and Elijah were assumed into heaven while still alive and not experiencing physical death.

What happened to Moses' wife? ›

Moses sends her and the children away before the Exodus from Egypt. Later, they reunite, but he may have taken a second wife, a "Cush*te" or Ethiopian woman. Several mysteries in this tale leave experts baffled. Why did Zipporah, a woman, perform the circumcision?

    What was Moses' sin? ›

From God's perspective, Moses has lost faith in the Lord to overcome Israel's faithlessness. Moses has not believed in God, and has not treated Yahweh as the Holy God who is able to overcome the weakness of His people. Indeed, this is exactly what Numbers 20:12 says was Moses' sin!

    What religion were Moses? ›

Even if, as modern scholars suggest, the character and role of Moses has been exaggerated in the biblical narrative, he remains a revered prophet in Judaism, Christianity and Islam – though not a perfect one.
