What are the requirements for 4K resolution? ›

A resolution of 3840 × 2160 or larger. An aspect ratio of 1.77∶1 (16∶9) or wider. Support for color depth of 8 bpc (24 bit/px) or higher. At least one HDMI input capable of supporting 3840 × 2160 at 24, 30, and 60 Hz progressive scan (though not necessarily with RGB / Y′C_BC_R 4:4:4 color), and HDCP 2.2.

This includes: A 4K TV or monitor that has a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and supports high dynamic range (HDR) and/or Dolby Vision for enhanced color and contrast. A streaming device or gaming console that can output 4K signals and supports the codecs and compression methods used by your streaming service.

There's enough 4K content out there already to make upgrading worth it, and most new TV shows and movies moving forward will be available in 4K. On the other hand, if you're on an internet plan with low data caps, you might not want to watch content in 4K, even if your device can handle it.

Overall, the two images look very similar. There isn't any more detail in the upscaled picture than you can see in the native 1080p picture, so whether or not it looks better is entirely subjective. There are some 4k TVs that have trouble upscaling 1080p, but it's rare.

To watch TV in 4K, you'll need a 4K TV (obviously), 4K content, a 4K streaming device, 4K Blu-ray player, a 4K–compatible HDMI cable, and plenty of internet speed. 4K TV: You can't play 4K content on a 1080p HD TV.

CPU. Though most of the heavy lifting in 4K is done by the GPU, the CPU is critically important as well. We recommend a higher end CPU with at least 12 cores and a single core frequency at 4.5GHz+. A current AMD Ryzen 9 or Intel Core i9 processor is ideal, though Ryzen 7 and Core i7 are suitable as well.

Required PC hardware

The most important thing is the video card. For an optimal 4K experience, only the best cards are suitable. Think about the GTX 1080 Ti, and RTX 2080 Super, or at least an RTX 3080. Without this video card, gaming in 4K is difficult, even with a suitable monitor.

The content recorded in 4K is still limited. To transfer videos in 4K it is necessary to have a minimum bandwidth of 25Mbps. The exported archives are very heavy and take up a lot of space. The prices of 4K televisions are not accessible for all pockets.

Can you tell the difference between 1080p and 4K? ›

It actually depends on the size of the screen and where you are sitting. From a distance, it is virtually impossible for someone to tell the difference in quality between a 1080p and 4K screen. However, if you have a big enough screen, in a small enough room the difference is immediately apparent.

First, right-click the Windows desktop and choose Display Settings. Set Display Resolution to 3,840 by 2,160 (it should say "Recommended" in parentheses next to it). This will ensure your PC is outputting a 4K signal.

A major precondition is that the interface is DisplayPort 1.2 or later. 4K@60 Hz display requires a very large transmission bandwidth of 16 Gbps. Neither DVI (including DualLink) nor HDMI 1.4 is capable of this kind of bandwidth. 4K 60 Hz display is possible with DisplayPort 1.2.
