1. UberEats
UberEats is one of the most popular food delivery services in the US. The app-based model allows customers to order food from local restaurants and connects restaurants to delivery drivers to complete the order.
When driving for UberEats, drivers can expect to earn around $8-$12 per hour by delivering food from local restaurants to addresses in the area.
Thanks to the app, deliveries usually run very smoothly, with drivers picking up deliveries two or three minutes before the food is ready and delivering to the address while following detailed guidelines like where the food needs to be delivered, i.e the door, the apartment, outside the building.
Getting started with UberEats is really easy as, providing you are over 19 and have a car made after 1998, you can simply apply on their website and give a few details about your car license and lifting capabilities.
You can also work for UberEats if you’re 18 and have a bike or scooter, which is great if you’re a college student looking to maximize your earnings without running a car.
2. Postmates
Postmates is an app that works in a similar way to UberEats. Drivers can apply quickly via the app and, once accepted, you can start making deliveries from local restaurants, stores, and retail establishments in your area.
To work for Postmates you must be at least 18 years old and take part in a background check before you start driving. It is commonly known that standard Postmates drivers can earn around $10 – $15 an hour. The exact hourly figure depending immensely on location and time/day you are out.
Tipping on Postmates
Postmates also allow drivers to keep 100% of any tips they receive.
- Working in San Francisco on a smooth Saturday night can net you up to $50 per hour including tips you receive.
- Working in a small town on a Tuesday night will be no more than minimum wage.
Postmate workers can decline order requests if they don’t want to make the delivery for reasons like inconvenient location or the user has a history of not tipping / bad tipping.
3. GrubHub
GrubHub is another good option for anyone looking to make money driving. The set up is fairly similar to the other delivery services that we’ve looked at. However, GrubHub offers its drivers a guaranteed pay rate of $10.50 an hour for picking up 85% of orders within their scheduled hours.
This is great for drivers who dread the thought of waiting around all night and not picking up any deliveries, as it guarantees you’ll be earning at least $10.50 an hour for your troubles.
Out of the four companies we’ve looked at, GrubHub seems to be one of the most well paid, with some drivers reporting earning $17-$19 per hour on busy weekends. Not bad pay for driving around for a few hours on a quiet Saturday night.
4. DoorDash
DoorDash is another food delivery service that is growing in popularity. It offers food delivery jobs in almost every state.
Unlike Postmates, DoorDash is for food deliveries only, meaning the app will only connect drivers with restaurants and customers, not grocery stores or other shops.
The requirements for working for DoorDash don’t differ much from that of Postmates, as they do require their drivers to undertake a background check and have at least 1 years driving experience and an insured vehicle.
The rate of pay is also pretty similar, with most drivers earning between $8 and $15 per hour and keeping 100% of their tips.

If driving around with smelly fast food in your car doesn’t sound like your kind of thing, then maybe transporting humans around might be more up your street. With the emergence of app-based taxi apps, becoming a taxi driver is easier and more flexible than ever.

Lyft is one of the most popular driving apps in the US and is always looking to hire new drivers in major cities. Unfortunately, to drive passengers for Lyft, drivers must be at least 21 years old, but it still offers a great opportunity for those who meet the company’s requirement.
Essentially, Lyft is an app that connects passengers with drivers to complete trips. Once you’re signed up, it’s easy to make your own schedule and complete rides in your area.
For those looking to access their cash quickly, Lyft offers instant cashouts via their ExpressPay service and also has a rental scheme for drivers who need access to a car in order to get started.
6. Uber
Uber is the partner to the UberEats delivery app which deals with rides rather than bites. To become a driver for Uber, it requires you to meet the requirements for your particular location and pass a background check which is a little more extensive than the UberEats application.
However, once you are accepted as an Uber driver, you’ll have good earning potential, as Uber is one of the most widely used ride apps in the US. Not only that, but Uber drivers are also welcome to take UberEats orders without having to make a second application.
Driving with Uber is said to be much more lucrative than delivering, with average hourly rates being closer to $20.

If you use your car too often to consider renting it out for money, then you could consider renting a parking space instead.

People can make extra money by renting out their garage, parking spot, or driveway as parking space, and I think it could be a nice way to make cash. The site allows you to list your space and get paid whenever someone reserves it. It work’s in much the same way as Spot Hero and offers a solid option for making an easy income from your unused space.
11. SpotHero
Signing up for Spot Hero is as simple as filling in a short form online and waiting for a response. Within 48 hours, you could be earning cash by allowing drivers to park in your spot.
Once your spot is listed, there’s not really much else you have to do, as Spot Hero pay you in a check or deposit once a month. Easy, right?
