Za is a slang word that is the shortened form of "pizza." It's acceptable in tournament Scrabble and is part of the official Scrabble dictionary.
For those unfamiliar, pizza is a type of food. It typically has a round crust made of yeast dough. The topping is usually a tomato-based sauce seasoned with spices, cheese (usually mozzarella) and any number of vegetables, meat or even fruit toppings.
Cheese, pepperoni and sausage are all popular types of pizzas. Some people prefer deluxe or supreme pizza, which traditionally comes topped with sausage, pepperoni, onions, olives and green peppers. Variations may include Canadian bacon, ground beef or mushrooms.
There's a rumor that some people enjoy pizza with anchovies. However, no one has actually met any of these people.
Pizza is one of the more popular dishes in America, though the term was originally "pizza pie." Over time, it became just "pizza," and now it's sometimes simply "za."
You can find pizza restaurants (or "pizzerias") in nearly every city in the United States. In fact, you could probably order pizza right now and have it delivered within 30 minutes or so. Don't forget to use a coupon if you have one to get a better deal.
