History of the God Cards

Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Egyptian God Cards, Explained (2)

The 'Egyptian God' cards are majorly distinctive and incredibly powerful. These cards were crafted by Maximillion Pegasus who also created the duel monsters game, and he based them on the three Ancient Egypt divine beasts that are very much related to the Millennium Puzzle. The spirits of these three 'Egyptian God' monsters are so powerful that Pegasus had to use the protection of the Millennium Eye to create the three cards without any harm from the spirits.

It is mentioned in the franchise that whomsoever possesses the three god cards becomes the Duel King. The original prototype cards were put in the nameless Pharaoh's tomb as Pegasus realized the cards were too powerful and dangerous to be mass-produced and asked Ishizu Ishtar to bury the prototypes in the Pharaoh's tomb. However, the counterfeits of these three cards were spread across the world.

There is a set of different stipulations that a duelist has to fulfill to summon any of the three god cards. Only the duelists that are somewhat linked to the ancient past are allowed and able to control a god card. Each of the three god cards requires a tribute of three cards to be normally summoned. If summoned through the graveyard, they return quickly to it. The three god cards respond to the strength of the user or duelist's heart and summoners with weak hearts get crippled or even die after summoning any of the three god cards. The names of the three god cards also hold great meaning and significance as all of them are named after important gods. Slifer is named after Osiris, the Egyptian god of life, death, and fertility. The name of Obelisk the tormentor refers to Obelisk, a type of tapering monument constructed by Ancient Egyptians. The Winged Dragon of Ra is named after Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun.

Abilities

Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Egyptian God Cards, Explained (3)

Slifer the Sky Dragon is one of the most powerful monster spirits in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. It is also known as the Saint Dragon - The God of Osiris in Japanese manga and anime. Slifer has great attacking and defense powers. One of its best abilities is that it replicates its opponent's attack and defense level numbers and increases them by 1000 times to make them its own. It quickly attacks the monster summoned by the opponent reducing the monster's attack or defense power by 2000 depending on its position. Obelisk has one of the most interesting abilities that require a duelist to tribute two of his monsters on the field. Doing this unlocks Obelisk's ability to increase its attacking power to infinity and attack any number of monsters active on the field the duelist chooses, despite whose turn it is. After executing the attack, Obelisk's attack level goes to its original value. Besides this, it has other effects and attacks that it can showcase on the field on its opponent's monsters.

The Winged Dragon of Ra has special abilities when it is summoned its attack level and defense levels are equivalent to the combined respective attack and defense levels of all the monsters that were used as tributes to summon it. Ra has few more special abilities than the other two god cards as it is the most powerful of the three. It is immune to all and any card effects when it is specially summoned, but this ability prevents it from attacking.

The life points of the increase with the value equal to the attack level of Ra if it gets targeted with De-Fusion and its attack level goes to zero. Ra is most fierce and invincible in its Egyptian God Phoenix form in which its attack cannot be canceled, it cannot be destroyed in any battle. This form of Ra is immune to all effects, and the duelist receives zero battle damage from the duels involving it. The three god cards reflect the order of a hierarchy that resembles a pyramid meaning the Winged Dragon of Ra is the most powerful and represents the top of a pyramid in Yu-Gi-Oh!. On the other hand, Obelisk and Slifer represent the base meaning they are both equals and less powerful than Ra.
