What is the X MR chart used for? ›

It is used to analyze central location. The moving range chart, on the bottom, shows the difference between consecutive readings. It is used to study system variability.

X is the average X value, and mR is the average moving range. The mR chart monitors the variation in the range between consecutive X values over time. You can refer to this as the short-term variation for the X-mR chart.

You can use X-bar and R charts for any process with a subgroup size greater than one. Typically, it is used when the subgroup size falls between two and ten, and X-bar and s charts are used with subgroups of eleven or more.

An XmR chart (aka Shewhart's Control Chart) calculates the control limits from the moving average range.
