Have we proven wormholes? ›

Einstein's theory of general relativity mathematically predicts the existence of wormholes, but none have been discovered to date. A negative mass wormhole might be spotted by the way its gravity affects light that passes by.

Imagine two towns on two opposite sides of a mountain. People from these towns would probably have to travel all the way around the mountain to visit one another. But, if they wanted to get there faster, they could dig a tunnel straight through the mountain to create a shortcut. That's the idea behind a wormhole.

In 1935, Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen extended general relativity to expand the above idea. They proposed the existence of tunnels or bridges through the space-time fabric. These tunnels could join two distant points in the universe. Thus, creating a weird shortcut that could minimise distance and travel time.

White holes are the opposite of black holes, in that they spit out light and matter, rather than trapping it. So far, white holes are purely hypothetical objects, but astronomers are contemplating how they could form in reality.

We can't see them, but we know that black holes can exist thanks to the groundwork laid by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. A black hole forms when the mass of an object, like a star, suddenly collapses down to a tiny volume. A small object with a large mass causes a gaping dent in space-time.

Does the Large Hadron Collider create black holes or wormholes that could be used as portals? No. Absolutely not.

Wormholes are not traversable in the theory of general relativity. Black hole solutions naturally have mathematical regions that can be interpreted as a wormhole, however you need to be able to travel faster than the speed of light to access this possibility. Hence it is not really a possibility.

For a simplified notion of a wormhole, space can be visualized as a two-dimensional surface. In this case, a wormhole would appear as a hole in that surface, lead into a 3D tube (the inside surface of a cylinder), then re-emerge at another location on the 2D surface with a hole similar to the entrance.

Known as the “wormhole growth paradox”, it occurs because while the volume of a wormhole grows for a very long time (depending exponentially on the size of the patch), the boundary seems to settle into equilibrium much more quickly.
