Working from home in style! Ohio investor builds $210,000 library (2024)

An Ohio property investor discovered the key to a successful work-from-home setup, and it will only set you back $210,000.

The homeowner of a stunning lakefront property in Akron, Ohio, teamed up with a pair of brilliant interior designers to make his '1920s-meets-Mad Men' vision for the house come to life.

Now in his 60s, the property investor purchased the house in 2006 for $450,000 as a 'weekend getaway' location.

The Ohio resident didn't want to spend too much money doing the place up at the time - but in 2019 he decided it was time to spruce the property up and make it his primary residence.

One room in the home that needed extra attention was the library - which he described as having dated wall-to-wall carpeting and dingy plaster walls. So alongside his interior design team - they spent a total of $210k on the space to make it feel 'inviting and comfortable'.

An Ohio property investor has perfected his 'work from home' setup - and it cost him $210,000 to build. Featured pieces of the 'jewel-box' library include a $47,000 chandelier, a $68,000 desk and $72,000 of walnut wood paneling, crafted specially for the room

The renovations for his library were inspired by a '1920s-meets-Mad Men' aesthetic - and the interior designers he worked with focused on 'making it feel inviting and comfortable,'

Interior designers Tanner Morgan and Jennifer Laouari from the Morgan Madison Design company told The Wall Street Journal: 'The objective for the room, as for the entire house, was to create a setting that felt original to the structure.'

The experts gutted the library completely and played with proportions and angles to create a new feel for the space, like a 'jewel-box'.

'While this room houses a lot of important pieces, we were intent on making it feel inviting and comfortable,' Morgan said.

One of the pieces that was specially chosen by the interior designers alongside the homeowner was a gorgeous chandelier by Bella Figura - a London-based lighting company inspired by Italian influences.

The chandelier - a custom Villanova flush mount fixture - cost $46,900 and was chosen to add a touch of old-world glamour to accomplish the homeowners 1920s vision for the room.

The owner, now in his 60s, didn't initially want to spend too much money on his weekend house - but in 2019 he decided to spruce the place up and make it his primary residence. The gorgeous kitchen seen here uniquely combines marble surfaces with matching walls and contrasts the white material with gold and wood finishes

The color palette and patterns in the kitchen were inspired by the same 1920's Mad Men mash-up that sparked the creativity behind the office renovations. The designers say that the cabinetry, appliances and waterworks ceiling tile being all the same custom color gives the space an 'airy' feel

A new rug was put down on top of the wooden floors to replace the old fitted carpet that had been decaying in the library since at least 2006.

A jute rug - which isa natural, renewable resource that is both eco-friendly and sustainable - by Patterson Flynn acted as a soft overlay for the hard flooring.

The rug - which cost $18,000 - contrasted the jewel-toned antique rug that was placed on top of it.

At the center of the room is a stunning office desk. The Charles Paris’s Pieds Palme writing table is worth a whopping $68,000.

The elegant piece of furniture is crafted in bronze and glass - with breathtaking detail on the curved legs and velvet lined glass drawers below the beautiful glass table.

Behind the exquisite table is a plush vintage chair worth $10,500. The piece is a circa-1960 Wormley for Dunbar 'In Clover' 932 Executive chair.

The fancy seat features a lavish grey cushioned frame on top of a solid walnut wooden base.

'We needed something tactile to soften the desk vignette. The chair had to have a character of its own to stand up to the visual weight of the writing table,' Laouari said.

The interior designers specifically chose pieces to add touches of old-money glamour to the lakeside property - which was reflected in individual pieces like the painting seen hanging here

Bold patterns were added throughout the house - in wallpaper choices, curtains, pillows and the flooring, as seen in this room. The designers chose to offset the harshness of the black and white patterned floor with a naturally-shaped animal-skin rug in the same color palette. Designer Laouari said: 'We wanted to create that timeless feeling of a more historic home'

According to the designers - the bold green cabinetry was inspired by their client's first car - a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass in its original color - Pinehurst Green - which he still owns today

In the primary bedroom - a saffron velvet curved Donghia sofa offers an 'energizing jolt of color' that the designers say is like a 'bold red lipstick'

In the corner of the state-of-the-art office is an ottoman - the 'A Lana' ottoman by the textile company Donghia, which was upholstered in a Pierre-Frey cut-velvet fabric.

The fancy stool reflects the earthy and vintage color scheme of the room - and its pattern adds a surprising, but not out of place element to the room. It is worth $5,250.

Custom wooden walnut paneling was installed for the entire library - brand new and crafted specially for the room at a cost of $72,000.

The homeowner wished to remain anonymous.
