Can OPNsense do WiFi? ›

Although wireless networks are supported in OPNsense, result may vary.

Supports the IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) and the Marker Protocol. LACP will negotiate a set of aggregable links with the peer in to one or more Link Aggregated Groups.

OPNsense is an open source, easy-to-use and easy-to-build FreeBSD based firewall and routing platform. OPNsense includes most of the features available in expensive commercial firewalls, and more in many cases.

Go to Interfaces ‣ Assignments And use the + to add a new interface. Press Save. The new interface will be called OPT1, click on [OPT1] in the left menu to change its settings. Press Save and then Apply changes.

If you want high customizability and a large support community, pfSense is a good option. If you prioritize an easy-to-use interface and frequent updates, instead, OPNsense may be better. Ultimately, pfSense offers more flexibility for seasoned users, but OPNsense provides a more polished out-of-box experience.

pfSense® software includes built in wireless capabilities that allow a firewall running pfSense software to be turned into a wireless access point, to use a wireless 802.11 connection as a WAN connection, or both.

By default OPNsense implements the widely used ISC DHCP server, but as this product has reached its end of life we choose to add an alternative (KEA) as of version 24.1 as a first step in deprecating this piece of software.

LAG vs LACP issue is put forward for the confusing conception between them. LAG is an actual instance for link aggregation. LACP is a control protocol to enable LAG automatically configure network switch ports, detach link failure and activate failover.

The main difference between Static Link Aggregation vs LACP is that Static Link Aggregation is a manual process that requires the network administrator to configure the switch ports to form a LAG, whereas LACP is an automated process that allows switches to detect and configure LAGs automatically.

Dynamic Routing (using routing protocols) is supported via an external plugin. Routing protocols support your network equipment in finding the best available path for your packets. We use Free Range Routing (FRR) to implement the various available protocols for dynamic routing.

Open-source firewall software​

However, we strongly recommend installing OPNsense which has a robust and powerful next-generation firewall software plugin known as Zenarmor (Sensei) .

Opnsense in a VM using the bridges. That works fine with my bridged fiber modem with PPPOE. This is one of the nodes in a cluster of 4.

Create the bridge itself. Select Interfaces ‣ Other Types ‣ Bridge and ADD a new bridge. Select from the member interfaces the unused interfaces you wish to add to the bridge, OPT2,OPT3 etc. Now Save the new bridge.

Select “interfaces” from the top left-hand corner then go for “Assignments”. Select “wireless” then select “add”. “Enable the interface” by putting a checkmark. Provide the necessary description.

What is this? The ESP8266 server creates its own wireless network (ESP8266 Soft-Access Point). So, other Wi-Fi devices can connect to that network (SSID: ESP8266-Access-Point, Password: 123456789).
