If you haven’t bought travel insurance before, you might be wondering what travel insurance is actually for. What does travel insurance actually cover?
It all depends on the specific policy, but generally speaking travel insurance usually covers the following.

This might seem like a silly thing to add but it’s actually a great plus if you ask me. If you’re anything like me (easily distracted and too positive thinking) you might forget to buy travel insurance before flying.

My personal experience with travel insurance
I guess this section should be called “My personal experience without travel insurance and why I now always 100% recommend it to everyone”, but that would have been a bit of a mouthful.
I’ll admit I haven’t always been the most responsible or forward thinking traveller. I consider myself a very chill and easy-going person, which means I often tend to forget about serious “adult” things when I plan my trips.
Travel insurance is unfortunately one of these. It’s not that I don’t want to pay for it, I just often forget to buy it before setting off on a trip (which is why I love the “already abroad” option by HeyMondo)!

After all, as an Italian citizen I am entitled to free healthcare in Europe, I don’t own any expensive things so even if my suitcase gets lost it’s not a big deal, and if my flight gets cancelled I have a flexible schedule so I can just get a refund and book a new one.
This over-relaxed thinking left me a few thousand euros out of pocket on my last trip to Tenerife, when I caught a UTI which developed into a kidney infection and I ended up hospitalised for two nights.
Despite being in Europe, I went to a private clinic since at the public hospital they made me wait for 3 hours with a 40°C temperature, and nobody ever attended me.
I weighed it up for a while and then just accepted I’d pay the bill, as I was feeling too horrible to wait any longer in the hospital waiting room.

If you have good travel insurance, you don’t need to torture yourself like I did weighing up pros, cons and expenses.
If something does happen and you need medical help, you can head directly to the fanciest private clinic in the area and get help straight away.
And while medical expenses might be the most obvious reason why travel insurance is important, there are so many things that can go wrong which travel insurance can cover you for.
Think about delayed flights and missed connections, lost luggage, stolen electronics, and many others. Whatever little inconvenience happens on your trip, there is a pretty good chance travel insurance will cover you for it.

So is travel insurance worth it?
The short and easy answer to this question is yes. Even if you don’t end up using it, it’s still worth it for the sake of travelling with peace of mind.
You pay a small fee in travel insurance to ensure that you won’t lose your booking money, or that you incur in extra expenses during your trip.
Whether it’s medical expenses related to an emergency or even just a lost suitcase, travel insurance will ensure you don’t have to spend loads of money on the mishaps that tend to happen on the road.
