Welcome to Florida’s The Villages, where the sun always shines and everyone has seemingly found the perfect paradise to spend their golden years. The idyllic neighborhood is the subject of Some Kind of Heaven, a new documentary from director Lance Oppenheim and producers The New York Times and Darren Aronofsky, which cracks the sunny facade of the nation’s largest retirement community.
The new film, which first premiered at Sundance last year, shines a light on the individuals who choose to live in the “Disneyland for Retirees,” as The Villages is sometimes called. Using interviews with residents and footage of everyday life in the community,Some Kind of Heaven explores what it’s like to live in the infamous retirement community.
“In my mind, the Villages is a place where the reality that [you and I] belong to seemingly does not exist,” Oppenheim told Vox. “They have their own newspaper that prints only the good news. They have a radio station that only plays the hits from the ’50s and the ’60s. There’s this deliberate gulf that they’ve created between their world and ours.”
