Picture this: By 2040, lights-out warehouses will become a reality, attended by a fleet of silent, constantly active robots managed by computer systems, with the occasional – and likely remote - human intervention. On highways, it will be normal to see platoons of autonomous vehicles with AI piloting systems running carbon-negative services. At home, we’ll accept deliveries direct from drones and sidewalk rovers. Can you envision this version of reality? And if so, what in the world will humans be doing?

The answer lies in the concluding chapters of Future of Work in Logistics, DHL’s latest Trend Report.

Supported by real-time data and assisted by tools like computer vision, humans will enjoy performing high-complexity, supervisory tasks. In warehouse operations, this will mean monitoring tricky maneuvers and managing robots. In long-haul transportation, humans will inspect and maintain fleets. In the last mile, couriers will use augmented reality contact lenses for easier, less stressful premium service deliveries.

In back-office operations, humans will still be in charge of communication, management-worker relations, training programs, and many other human-centric activities. Similarly, in customer service operations, the account manager’s personal touch and engagement will be essential to build rapport, handle complex requests, and close out contracts. Strategy and planning will remain a human-centric function as strategic decision-decision making, executive tasks and exceptions handling requires experienced people.
