2 Choose your question type
There are two main types of questions that you can use in your questionnaire: closed-ended and open-ended. Closed-ended questions are those that offer a fixed set of response options, such as yes/no, multiple choice, or rating scales. In a quantitative survey, I will strongly recommend to focus on close-ended questions and avoid including any open-ended questions (OEs)Typing OE responses take much more effort and hence adds to the respondent fatigueQuant studies are for validation/measurement, not for exploration. OEs are often used to clarify or expand on responses to closed-ended questions but they are rarely insightfulPew Research Centre found that in some cases non-response to OEs can be as high as 50%+ i.e. half of the respondents (who are paid to respond) didn’t type anything, with the proportion increasing among those who were on responding on mobile phones.The cognitive burden due to OEs impacts the quality of the subsequent answers. Do we want to risk that?
