In terms of data sources, I ask a few questions of each source that comes up in my search. First, is the source less than four years old? This gets tricky because of our proximity to the pandemic as it created significant change quickly, but typically research over 4 years old may not be current enough. Second, is the article peer-reviewed? Peer-reviewed research holds much more weight for me in the validity of the content being referenced. Lastly, does the article support the need for the research you are planning? If it doesn't then it is either not appropriate or you are not adding a new brick onto the wall of knowledge.

I am currently researching some potential benefits of online homework for my workload and pupils' engagement. In my case, I have decided to use a triangulation method I've learned in David Hopkins' 'A Teacher's Guide to Classroom Research'(2008). To investigate the workload aspect I have carefully timed my marking sessions (data source 1), interviewed other teachers on their performance and ideal time spent marking per pupil work (data source 2), and asked pupils, in a Likert questionnaire, on the frequency of marking (data source 3). I am still analysing the data, but I hope that those three sources will form my triangle of validation.

Since, as a teacher, Ph.D. student, husband, and father of two lovely girls, I have very limited time for analysing data, so when that happens I want to make it fast and rigorous. The use of CAQDAS (Computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software) that is free to use, such as QDA Miner Lite for Windows or TAMS for MacOSX, can be a powerful way to get data analysed quickly if you know what you're doing, especially for content analysis. Even Excel has a simple analysis tool that can help with insights.

In my perspective, I will consider several other options. The 1st is doing peer review. Submit your research to reputable journals for peer review to ensure scrutiny from experts in the field.The 2nd is doing triangulation, by use multiple methods, data sources, or researchers to cross-verify findings, enhancing robustness.The 3rd is doing longitudinal studies to conduct studies over time to observe trends and changes, strengthening the reliability of your conclusions.The 4th is always keep clear documentation every step of your research process transparently to facilitate scrutiny and validation by others.These measures collectively contribute to a more comprehensive assurance of the validity and reliability of your research findings.
