What is a Faraday bag and do you need one? (2024)

Faraday pouches can help reduce the chances of your car being stolen; we explain all

Modern cars are full of convenience features that help make life just that little bit easier, and one of the more commonplace is keyless entry.

These systems allow you to keep your car key in your pocket or bag, with the car sensing the key’s proximity to the car and unlocking it as you approach. Many keyless entry systems will also let you start the car with a button without having to use the key once it detects you are inside the vehicle.

Sounds perfect, right? Well, while keyless entry is a popular and widely fitted feature, it can also make a car more vulnerable to being stolen – something a Faraday bag or pouch can help address.

What is a Faraday bag?

A Faraday bag, pouch or box is essentially a small Faraday cage, named after its inventor, Michael Faraday.

Faraday bags block electromagnetic fields, such as those emitted by keyless entry systems.

Why do I need a Faraday bag?

Some keyless entry systems can be vulnerable to keyless theft, also known as relay theft.

Car keys with a keyless function constantly transmit a signal that the car recognises as you approach it; when the car recognises the key is close (within a couple of feet), it unlocks itself.

Problem is, car thieves know this, and can use an electronic tool that can pick up the signal from a key if it is placed near a door, window or exterior wall in your home.

This electronic box then amplifies and repeats the key’s signal, which is picked up by a second thief standing close to the car with a second electronic device. This fools the car into thinking the key is close, at which point the vehicle can be unlocked, started and driven away.

Some car makers have taken steps to combat this phenomenon, equipping keyless keys with motion sensors that only activate the signal when the key is moving, or deploying more sophisticated technology that prevents the signal from being cloned.

But some of these techniques are more successful than others, and a Faraday bag, box or pouch acts as a barrier to the signal, giving an extra layer of security.

How does a Faraday bag work?

The signals sent by keyless keys are electronic, and work by sending out electrons. A Faraday pouch is effectively a metal mesh inside a fabric or leather bag, and the layers of metal absorb the electrons being sent out by the key, stopping or greatly reducing their emission, and thus giving would-be thieves no signal to clone.

Is a Faraday bag expensive?

No. Faraday pouches are relatively simple things, and can be purchased for £5 or less. Larger pouches that can hold multiple keys are a little more expensive, while Faraday boxes start at around £10.

Is one Faraday bag as good as another?

Yes and no. Tests of Faraday bags have found them to generally be effective at blocking signals, but the price, materials and build quality of individual bags can vary, so a little studying of online reviews can help you find a decent one.

How do I know my Faraday bag is working?

There are a couple of ways of doing this. If the bag is large enough, put your mobile phone in it and see if you can call it or connect a Bluetooth device: if you can, the bag is not doing its job properly.

You can also put your car key in the bag and see if the car will detect its proximity when in the bag, or try pressing the lock or unlock buttons through the bag to see if the signal can escape it.

FAQs

What is a Faraday bag and do you need one? ›

A faraday bag is a bag/pouch that blocks signal that are transmitted by a keyless entry system. The name Faraday comes from the inventor of the faraday cage, Michael Faraday. When you put your key into a faraday bag, the signals that are sent are blocked as the bag is effectively a small faraday cage.

Do you really need a Faraday bag? ›

Outside of law enforcement work, consider purchasing Faraday bags to protect your personal devices and key fobs from hackers and unauthorized access. I use Faraday bags for my spare key fobs and a Faraday backpack when traveling with my computer or tablet.

What does a Faraday bag do? ›

With a wide range of applications, they have become increasingly popular in today's interconnected and privacy-conscious world.

What are the disadvantages of Faraday bags? ›

Cons of Using Faraday Bags

This can be inconvenient for those who need constant connectivity. Bulkiness and Limited Capacity Depending on the design, some Faraday bags can be bulky and may not accommodate all devices. Users need to ensure they select the appropriate size for their needs.

Can your phone be tracked in a Faraday bag? ›

A Faraday bag is a cell phone signal blocking bag that prevents any kind of radio waves that your cell phone is built to receive from entering the bag, keeping your phone safe from tracking methods like those I described above. Whenever you need your phone, you can take it out of the bag and use it normally.

Does TSA allow Faraday bags? ›

Yes you can. All the SLNT products scan just like any other textile going through the X-ray machine and will not be flagged.

Is a metal box as good as Faraday pouch? ›

Wood-frame and copper or aluminum mesh are common for home-built Faraday cages. Solid metal boxes are good choices, but if you are not buying one that is specifically designed for good electronic shielding, pay close attention to door edges and ensure that there is good electrical contact between the sides.

Do cheap Faraday pouches work? ›

The answer to that question is yes and no. There have been many studies and most faraday bags work exactly the same and they are generally effective at blocking the signals. But the price, build quality, and materials can vary so it would be an idea to look at online reviews to help you find the best one for you.

Do Faraday bags drain battery? ›

A Faraday pouch won't drain your batteries. It simply contains the electromagnetic and radio waves of your electronics and keyless entry keys within it. It also stops external electromagnetic interferences from reaching the items inside.

Is a Faraday bag worth it? ›

Yes and no. Tests of Faraday bags have found them to generally be effective at blocking signals, but the price, materials and build quality of individual bags can vary, so a little studying of online reviews can help you find a decent one.

Will aluminum foil work as a Faraday cage? ›

The effects of the cage can be enhanced by layering conductive and non-conductive layers - this creates a cage within a cage within a cage, providing additional protection without the need of specialised materials. Though it may sound complicated, you can make your own Faraday cage from aluminum foil.

Are Faraday bags legal? ›

Since a Faraday bag blocks electromagnetic radiation and prevent radio signals from accessing your digital devices, using it may raise some curiosity during the screening process. However, as long as the bag itself and the items inside comply with TSA regulations, there should be no major issues.

Should I keep my phone in a Faraday bag? ›

Keeping your devices in a Faraday bag is a simple way to preserve your basic right to privacy. Purchasing a Faraday bag is an affordable, one-time investment for the protection of your data in the past, present, and future. Leaving your devices unguarded is leaving yourself open to the risk of privacy violations.

Do EMP bags really work? ›

Radios, cell phones, and other similar electronics are also vulnerable to the effects of EMPs. These devices are often essential for communication in emergency situations, so protecting them from EMP damage is crucial. It's important to note that faraday bags and cages provide only partial protection from EMPs.
