1 Test planning and scope
One of the first challenges in test management is to define the test scope and plan the test activities according to the project requirements, risks, and resources. You need to identify the test objectives, the test levels, the test types, the test cases, the test data, the test environment, and the test schedule. You also need to consider the dependencies, assumptions, constraints, and contingencies that may affect your testing process. A good test plan should be clear, realistic, and aligned with the project goals and stakeholders' expectations. You should also review and update your test plan regularly to reflect any changes or feedback.

Some of the biggest challenges include:Clearly defining the scope of testing and allocating resources such as time and personnel.Creating effective test cases that cover all scenarios and keeping test cases up-to-date with changes in the application.Prioritizing and addressing defect based on their severity.Ensuring the availability and quality of test data and handling sensitive data ensuring GDPR.Maintaining clear and concise documentation for test cases.Defining and collecting metrics that provide meaningful insights into testing process and product quality.Providing timely and accurate reports to stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.

Defining the test scope and planning the all test activities (before, during and after) require a "test design". It is obviously a design activity. Therefore a comprehensive testing process including feedbacks should be designed and executed as management of testing.

2 Test execution and automation
Another challenge in test management is to execute the test cases and verify the expected results. You need to ensure that your test environment is stable, secure, and consistent. You also need to monitor and control the test progress and quality. You should use appropriate tools and techniques to automate your testing tasks whenever possible to save time, reduce errors, and increase coverage. However, automation also has its own challenges, such as maintaining and updating the test scripts, choosing the right automation framework, and integrating the automation tools with other systems.

During execution of the test it is essential to minimise all variations that will be effective on the testing process. Therefore, all controllable environmental factors should be kept within the allowable limits. The same should be done when the testing protocol is automated. No need to say that all above sentences are valid for validated or verified testing procedures.

3 Test documentation and traceability
A third challenge in test management is to document your test activities and results in a clear and consistent manner. You need to record the test inputs, outputs, defects, issues, and changes in a test management tool or a document management system. You also need to ensure that your test artifacts are traceable to the project requirements, specifications, and deliverables. Traceability helps you to measure the test coverage, impact, and quality. It also helps you to track the test status, history, and changes. You should follow the standards and guidelines for test documentation and traceability in your organization or industry.

Documentation can be difficult, especially when you are dealing with very complex system tests. These are not simple unit tests, where the focus is on one specific building block, but instead it is an intersection of many systems and structures working together. The problem comes with the variation of workload in each of the systems under test. Making sure you understand the environment setup, along with the workload parameters, and the expected duration and results are the bare minimum requirements for documenting a test case.

The important thing is to maintain standardizasyon of the subject testing activities. In order to do this you have to prepare efficient and usable documentation (audo visual or written). This effectice documentation will contribute considerably to minimise variations during testing and reporting activities. On the other hand treceability will definitely contribute to strengthen the reliability of the whole testing process.

4 Test reporting and communication
A fourth challenge in test management is to report and communicate your test findings and recommendations to the relevant stakeholders. You need to prepare and present test reports that are accurate, timely, and informative. You also need to tailor your test reports to the needs and expectations of different audiences, such as developers, managers, clients, or users. You should use appropriate formats, metrics, charts, and visuals to convey your test results and insights. You should also use effective communication skills and channels to share your test reports and feedback.

Test reports are actually the precious output or product or value of the whole testing activities. Therefore test reports should be prepared with a great attention and care. It should contain all required information preciously and neatly in well composed manner. Unfortunately test reporting is one of the weakest point for most instutions. Quality of test reporting should be increased and especially for this purpose some tailor made trainings should be organised to increase awareness and consciousness. The same is valid for effective communication processes in all phases of testing activities.

5 Test evaluation and improvement
A fifth challenge in test management is to evaluate and improve your testing process and performance. You need to analyze your test results and metrics to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of your testing activities. You also need to collect and review the feedback and lessons learned from your testing team and stakeholders. You should use appropriate methods and tools to conduct test audits, reviews, retrospectives, or surveys. You should also implement and monitor the action plans and best practices to improve your test quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.
