1 Formative assessments
Formative assessments are ongoing and informal checks of learners' progress and understanding during the training process. They involve quizzes, feedback, discussions, self-assessments, or observations and can help you identify learners' strengths and weaknesses, adjust your training strategies, and provide timely and constructive support. Moreover, formative assessments can increase learners' motivation, engagement, and confidence, as well as enhance their metacognitive and self-regulation skills. Additionally, they can foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment while providing rich and diverse data on learners' needs and preferences. However, formative assessments can be time-consuming and difficult to manage with large or diverse groups of learners. They may also be subjective and inconsistent depending on the criteria, tools, and feedback methods used. Furthermore, they may be influenced by learners' emotions, expectations, and attitudes. Lastly, they can be challenging to align with the learning objectives and outcomes of the training program.

Formative assessments help identify learner strengths/weaknesses, adjust training, provide timely feedback, boost motivation/engagement/confidence, enhance metacognitive/self-regulation skills, foster collaboration, and provide rich data on learner needs/preferences but also can be time-consuming, difficult to manage, subjective, influenced by learners' emotions, and challenging to align with learning objectives.

2 Summative assessments
Summative assessments are formal and comprehensive evaluations of learners' achievement and performance at the end of a training program or specific unit. They can include tests, exams, projects, portfolios, or presentations and help measure the extent to which learners have met the learning objectives and outcomes, evaluate the effectiveness of your training program, provide feedback and recognition to learners, and demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and competencies. Summative assessments can offer several benefits, such as clear and objective evidence of learners' achievement and performance, motivation for learners to review their learning, comparison of learners' results against standards or criteria, and accountability and quality assurance for your training program. However, they can also cause stress and anxiety for learners due to high-stakes or limited retakes or revisions. Additionally, they can lead to surface or strategic learning approaches that focus on memorizing or reproducing information rather than understanding or applying it. Furthermore, summative assessments may disregard individual differences in learning styles and preferences. They may also be influenced by external factors like test conditions, instructions, or scoring methods.

3 Balancing formative and summative assessments
Formative and summative assessments are not mutually exclusive or incompatible, and can in fact complement each other to provide a holistic and balanced view of learners' progress and achievement. To balance the two in your training program, define clear and measurable learning objectives and outcomes, align your assessment methods, tools, and criteria with these objectives, and use a variety of assessment methods. Additionally, provide frequent and constructive feedback to learners, involve them in the assessment process, and review and evaluate your assessment practices regularly. Doing so will ensure that you capture learners' diverse and complex learning processes and outcomes.

While Formative and Summative assessments are not mutually exclusive; they are tools that serve very different purposes. Understanding when and how to apply these techniques to real life scenarios is going to be just as important as understanding the assessments themselves.

Much to talk about assessments and the most variances on how to determine whether a student or a course taker is learning or not. Of course, we cannot neglect the importance of such assessments, the guidelines they provide on which path to choose while learning and the measurement of knowledge the audience is retaining. However, I would like to invite readers to ponder the applicability of such measures in the real world. How would an assessment provide confidence to an "assessed professional"? Assessments and the variances (formative or summative) are unique if only they emulate a real world situation in order to prepare and give experience to the taker.Experience and practice speak louder. Do you agree?
