Have you ever tried Violife cheese or any other vegan cheese? As a French person, I can tell you that vegan cheese is a hard sell for anybody who’s eaten cow, sheep or goat cheese all their life, but it can also be an eye-opener if you’re trying to add more plant-based foods to your diet. You don’t even need to be vegan to like it, as Violife caters for all palates. In the UK, Violife Cheese products are very easy to find in most supermarkets and in the US readers, Violife is available via Whole Foods.

Why Violife Vegan Cheese?

I’ve been a vegetarian for environmental reasons since August 2021 and I’ve slowly been following a vegan or plant-based diet in my every day life. I’ve also done Veganuary and discovered wonderful vegan alternatives to meat and dairy.

So far, I’ve replaced:

  • my morning butter on toast with nut butter on toast
  • my pork sausages with mushroom and rosemary sausages
  • my egg and milk pancakes with banana and oat milk pancakes

Obviously, vegan cheese was only a matter of time. When I was contacted for an honest review of several Violife Cheese products, I was really excited because I already know Violife and I’ve used their products in the past.

These are the vegan cheeses I received:

What’s the Deal with Vegan Cheese?

I’m not going to deny it, we French take our cheese seriously and it took a German friend to convert me to plant-based cheeses, when he served a wonderful spread of vegan cheeses, known as fauxmages, at his birthday party in July 2021. They were delicious and from that day on, I was sold.

From London to France, it’s only a skip and a hop but for my French family, from cheese to vegan cheese was a big cultural challenge. I was apprehensive the first time I brought vegan cheese to southern France. Everybody’s initial reaction was to make fun of me (why wouldn’t they, right? Bringing fake cheese to the land of cheese), but my mother, who’s an adventurous eater, was brave and tried the spread of vegan cheeses. She enjoyed it so much, that she now eats vegan cheese regularly. Win-win for her diabetes.

On the topic of health, vegan cheese can really a positive difference for your body if you are trying to phase out dairy products.

What is Violife Vegan Cheese made of?

Before we look at how I used Violife vegan cheese products in my kitchen, let’s dive into the ingredients they use, as it’s very important to know what exactly we feed our body.

Violife’s range of award-winning vegan alternative to cheese products is free from dairy, preservatives, casein, lactose, gluten, nuts and soya. It is based on coconut oil and is fortified with Vitamin B12, which plays an important role in the metabolism of every cell in our bodies.

Ingredients in Violife vegan cheese alternatives include:

  • Water
  • Coconut Oil
  • Modified Starch
  • Starch
  • Sea Salt
  • Sunflower Kernel Grounded
  • Acidity Regulator: Lactic Acid
  • Olive Extract
  • Colour: B-Carotene Vitamin B12

Is Violife Vegan Cheese Healthy?

Let’s compare apples to apples. The main nutritional elements in dairy cheese are calcium, fat and protein. Dairy cheese also brings vitamins A and B12, along with zinc, phosphorus, and riboflavin.

Violife Vegan Cheese is from dairy, soya, gluten, lactose, and nuts. It uses coconut as a base, which makes it more suited to allergy-free lifestyles. Depending on which Violife vegan cheese alternative you eat, it is also a source of calcium, fat and Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is added, which is a nice touch since vegan diets often lack vitamin B12. Coconut brings nothing on the protein front, so bear that in mind for your daily protein intake.

Of course, you can make vegan cheese at home too if you want to control the process from scratch, but it is quite time-consuming. I’ll be honest, I did consider it, once in a blue moon, but I like that Violife Cheese is ready to use.

So there. How can you use Violife vegan cheese?

Grilled Vegan Cheese Sandwich: Violife Smoky Cheddar Flavour Slices

For the grilled cheese lovers in your life, Violife Smoky Cheddar Flavour Slices is the bomb and it melts beautifully well between two slices of granary bread.

Vegan Cheese Open Sandwich: Violife Original Flavour Slices

If you are looking for a mild sliced cheese alternative, Violife Original Flavour Slices makes a good neutral base to an open sandwich like this one: sunflower seeded bread, vegan cheese slices, sliced cucumber and black sesame seeds. The only thing it might be missing is a binder so as tomato paste or hummus.

Vegan Mac’n Cheese: Original Flavour Grated

For my first vegan mac’n cheese, I picked the recipe in Simple Recipes, Amazing Food, All Plants: BOSH!, a vegan cookbook that’s usually very reliable but sadly, I did not care for their recipe. It has nothing to do with Violife’s Original Flavour Grated; it’s not the right recipe if you’re not a big fan of nutritional yeast (which apparently I’m not). Anyhow, here goes the result.

Violife Vegan Cheese Review (4)

The texture of Violife’s grated vegan cheese is not my favourite, but it does the job.

As for the two other vegan cheeses, I’m a big fan of Violife’s Epic Mature Cheddar Flavour Block, it’s a great all-rounder. Violife Le Rond Camembert Flavour is supposed to be amazing and I regret messing with it, but I tried to make a vegan alternative the Swiss dish of rösti with grilled gruyère and left the camembert so long in the oven that it completely melted. Which brings me to the next item in this review.

Violife Vegan Cheese Recipes

On their website, Violife offers a great selection of vegan recipes, from veggie burritos to cheeseburger dumplings or red velvet and vanilla cupcakes. And since Violife is a Greek brand, yes, there is a vegan greek salad recipe too :)

All you need to do is browse and get inspired.
