How do you use equations in docs? ›

Select Insert > Equation or press Alt + =. To use a built-in formula, select Design > Equation. To create your own, select Insert > Equation > Insert New Equation. Use your finger, stylus, or mouse to write your equation.

Creating Formulas with the Formula Editor

Click the position in the current PDF document, where you want to place a formula. This opens the Edit Formula window with the Formula Editor. For simple formulas, like x = 2ab, just start typing into the Formula Editor on the Formula tab.

Select Equation from the Dropdown

After clicking on the "Insert" tab, a dropdown menu will appear. From the options provided, choose "Equation." This action prompts Google Docs to create a space for you to input your mathematical equation.

Use Shortcut

Use the shortcut: Alt + Enter (Windows) or Cmd + Enter (Mac). Repeat these steps to split the text into as many lines as you want. Press 'Enter' to see the result. In addition to the shortcut, you can use the CHAR(10) function in your formulas to insert line breaks.

To create a function manually:

Select the cell where the answer will appear. In our example, we'll select C10. Type the equals sign (=), then type the desired function name. You can also select the desired function from the list of suggested functions that appears below the cell as you type.
