Harley-Davidson is the number one motorcycle manufacturer in the United States. The name alone conjures up the stinging scent of burnt gasoline and the roaring sound of bulky chrome and steel bikes glinting in the sun. Harley-Davidson was founded over 100 years ago in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by William S. Harley, as well as Arthur, Walter and William A. Davidson. The company has established itself as one of the key brands on the global as well as the domestic U.S. motorcycle market. On home ground, the Minnesota company reached a staggering 30.6 percent market share in 2020. California is the number one state for motorcycle registrations. In 2018, more than 820,000 motorcycles were registered in the Sunshine State. Over the next couple of years, the motorcycle industry is expected to tap into the electric mobility market and attract new customer groups.
In the heavyweight motorcycle segment, the most important players include Harley-Davidson, the Honda Motor Company, and Polaris, which owns Indian Motorcycles and Victory Motorcycles. Heavyweight motorcycles are a class of cruisers with engine displacements of over 651 cc.
