The above is a picture of a junk journal in progress.
Its base is a used, worthless book that probably would have ended up in a landfill.
But I bought it for a dollar, and am in the process of turning it into treasure.
Junk journals regularly sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay and Etsy.
Not all of them, of course, but the ones that do sell for a lot of money are basically something that absolutely anyone could do with a little time and effort.
And true junk journals use all types of materials that were going to be thrown away in the first place.
They can be made of literal garbage.
There is a whole industry revolving around the junk journal idea. Specialty papers, stickers, tools, etc are sold to creators who then make these books using new and used products.
Junk mail envelopes, product packaging, recycled paper of all kinds.
These things are processed to create beautiful works of art.
If you aren’t the creative type, there is also the option of selling junk journal supplies to the artists.
On Etsy and eBay, there are listings for painted book pages, recycled envelopes, all types of used papers like old post cards, photos, letters, documents, pamphlets, tickets, and on and on.
Selling to the book makers is a lucrative as making and selling the books.
