Treasure Hunter (2024)

Treasure Hunter (1)
Treasure Hunter (2)
Treasure Hunter (3)

Treasure Hunter is a daily activity where players use keys to unlock chests in order to win prizes. It was released on 4 February 2014 where it replaced its predecessor, Squeal of Fortune. Members cannot play Treasure Hunter while on a free-to-play world.

Players receive a certain amount of keys every day and may obtain more through other methods such as purchasing them or performing certain in-game activities. Each key unlocks a chest which rewards the player with a random prize where each prize has a varying degree of rarity.

The release of Treasure Hunter saw the removal of Yelps and the addition of a new figurehead for the activity: a princess named Alice. These keys can be obtained in the same way spins were. Any unused spins or unclaimed prizes were turned into keys. Rewards from the Treasure Hunter were rebalanced to be more relevant to player's skill levels. A new currency, Hearts of Ice, was also added which allowed players to freeze up to 10 prize categories to prevent receiving rewards in those categories.

On 7 April 2014, Treasure Hunter received a major overhaul in which many members-only prizes could now be claimed by free-to-play players. The ability to talk to Alice was also added.

On 27 September 2021, an update was released which made several changes to Treasure Hunter. Hearts of Ice were removed entirely from the game, with players' existing hearts being converted to oddments at the rate of 5 hearts per oddment. The interface was also updated to include the disclosure of probabilities for obtaining each specific prize, and several prizes were removed such as skilling outfits, slayer masks, wicked hood teleport tokens, and brilliant alchemist's amulet fragments. The 200,000,000 coins prize was also replaced with a 50,000,000 coins prize instead.

On 11 April 2024 with reintroduction to the Vault of Riches, the slayer masks, the wicked hood teleport tokens as well as Fixate charge tokens were added back to Treasure Hunter.

Chests

Treasure Hunter (4)
Treasure Hunter (5)

Five chests are offered, each containing a random prize from the current list of rewards. You can see the possible rewards for your next chest by clicking on the "Probabilities" button. Once a chest is selected, a key is used to open it and the gem containing a prize of the appropriate rarity is revealed. The player is offered the option of placing the prize in the bank (if bankable) or inventory (provided there is space), collecting later or converting to oddments. The number of oddments given varies base on prize rarity. There are five rarities of prizes, going from most to least common: white, yellow, orange, red, and purple.

Each item has a category, which gives an idea of the item's purpose and function. The categories are as follows:

  • Promotional: Temporary items that are only on Treasure Hunter for a limited time or are more easily obtainable for a certain period of time.
  • Lamps: Items which give direct XP in a skill.
  • Stars: Items which give bonus XP in a skill.
  • Proteans: Sets of protean items which can be processed for experience in their respective skills.
  • Cash Bags: A range of various cash prices.
  • Utility: Useful items such as magic notepaper, springs and portable skilling packs.
  • Skilling Supplies: Items which are useful for training skills, such as training dummies, spirit gems or divine locations.

Options

Treasure Hunter (6)

Near the top-right of the Treasure Hunter interface is the options menu, shaped like a gear. This gives the player several tickboxes with which to change several settings for how Treasure Hunter plays on their account:

  • Autoredeem key tokens - automatically redeems any key tokens received as drops or rewards.
  • Autoredeem cash bags - automatically redeems any cash bags won directly through Treasure Hunter.
  • Autoredeem Dungeoneering boxes - automatically redeems any dungeoneering token boxes won directly through Treasure Hunter.
  • Autoredeem Prismatic Stars - automatically redeems any prismatic fallen stars to a skill of the player's choice.
  • Autoredeem Prismatic Lamps - automatically redeems any prismatic lamps to a skill of the player's choice.

Item management

Item management is an interface that allows players to see what Treasure Hunter items they have in their bank, separated into categories. From this interface, players can view items and destroy certain unwanted ones. Clicking on items gives information about them.

  • Skill items - includes slayer masks/helms, protean items, and skill outfits. Items can be destroyed individually.
  • Combat items - weapons, armour, and training dummies. Items can be destroyed individually.
  • Utility items - includes magic notepaper. Items can be destroyed individually.
  • Cosmetic items - includes fish masks and ice warrior equipment. Items can be destroyed individually.
  • Food - anything edible obtained from Treasure Hunter. Items can be destroyed individually.
  • Reclaimable - anything that is reclaimable, from all other categories. Options to destroy all reclaimable items, all free to reclaim items, and individual items are available.
  • Miscellaneous - anything that doesn't fit in other categories. Items can be destroyed individually.

Area restrictions

Players cannot play Treasure Hunter in the following areas:

Obtaining keys

Treasure Hunter (7)
Treasure Hunter (8)

There are various ways to gain treasure hunter keys, both through gameplay and other means.

Keys on Treasure Hunter are used in the following order:

  • Promotional keys
  • Daily Keys
  • Earned keys (100 max and obtained through gameplay)
  • Bought keys

Promotional keys

During certain promotions such as Hall of Heralds and Gifts from the Harvest players are able to gain keys that can only be used during the promotion they were obtained from.

Daily keys

Players receive a certain amount of keys per day for logging in. Free players get 1 key, members get 2 keys, and Premier Club members get 3 keys for the duration of their Premier Club. Players can check how many daily keys they have left by hovering over the number of keys in the Treasure Hunter window, which shows the breakdown of their key types.

Monster drops

Nearly every monster in RuneScape, barring those in minigames or Dungeoneering, has a chance of dropping a Key token. They can still drop if you already have 10 or more earned keys, but you will be unable to claim it until you have less than 10 earned keys.

Skilling activities

Players may gain key tokens through any of the same methods that can be used to find a strange rock, in addition to Divination, whether they are a member or not. Unlike strange rocks, a key token obtained whilst skilling with a full inventory will not replace an item of the player's, it will be redeemed automatically or dropped on the ground if you already have 10 or more earned keys.

Distractions and diversions

Every month, a player may gain a single key token for starting a game of Troll Invasion. Additionally, a different distraction and diversion is chosen each week to give a player a key token for participating. A key token from distractions and diversions will only be given if one has fewer than 10 earned keys. Events rotate each week in the following order:

Featured D&D
Penguin Hide and Seek

For the week of 11 September–17 September.

If this information seems incorrect, click here to force an update.

Quests

The completion of any quest will earn the player 2 additional earned keys. This includes any sub-quest of Recipe for Disaster, Dimension of Disaster, and the Thieving Guild capers. The maximum number of keys obtainable through questing is 100.

Challenges

A free key is given for completing a daily challenge, totalling between 84 and 93 extra keys a month if all 3 challenges are completed every day. Challenge keys count as earned keys. Although some daily challenges are available to free players, only members get keys for completing them.

Marketplace

Up to 15 keys can be bought each day with oddments in the Marketplace. Keys obtained this way count as earned keys.

Bonds

Players can purchase Bonds using in game or real life currency and redeem the bond for 15 keys. These keys count as bought keys.

Buying keys

Keys can be bought in groups of 15, 35, 75, 200, or 450 keys. There isn't a cap on how many bought keys a player can have at a time. Players can spend an unlimited amount of money on keys. Players can only buy 20,000 keys in a single day. There is no monthly maximum when purchasing keys.

Bought keys will expire 12 months after they were bought, implying a maximum of 7,320,000 bought keys at any one time.

Rewards

Various prizes can be won from Treasure Hunter, ranging from common skilling items, to bonus experience stars, to rare, untradeable weapons. When a chest is selected and the prize presented, it can either be sent to the player's bank (for most items), the inventory, or converted directly to oddments.

Probabilities

Initially the probabilities were only visible on the RuneScape Mobile client, but this information has since been added to the PC version in the Probabilities menu. These display the average probabilities of receiving a certain gem. The probabilities can vary by promotion and it is unknown if everyone has the same probabilities.

Controversies

Similar to the controversies surrounding the Squeal of Fortune, some players have expressed concern that the ability to buy experience through the reward lamps that can be won, and pay real money for prizes, is a form of real-world trading.

Major concern regarding Treasure Hunter begun in Autumn 2017, following the release of the Prize Pool promotion. A large number of players argued that Prize Pool was encouraging gambling by allowing players to risk losing their prizes and called for Jagex to respond. Mod Balance responded that Jagex was going to have a meeting regarding microtransactions and would issue a statement soon after.[1] Substantial criticism of Treasure Hunter continued because of the large number of promotions that took place despite Mod Balance's response, including criticism of Mysteria, which features previous promotions on a rotating basis every four hours.

It is important that we don’t over-promise; to be clear, this doesn’t mean the end of Treasure Hunter promotions. What we are committing to is better managing their impact, duration and regularity, making some immediate changes in the short term while looking to move to a more balanced approach in the mid to long term.
— Jagex[2]

Jagex released a statement on 23 October 2017 regarding the monetisation of RuneScape. In the statement, it is stated that Prize Pool will never be returning to the game, 2nd Chance Tuesday will not be returning for the remainder of the year, and that work has begun on a rework of Treasure Hunter to make the rewards more cosmetic.[2] On 27 June 2018, the Live Events Team (who are responsible for microtransactions in RuneScape) announced some changes to Treasure Hunter in the future, including the Oddments Store being introduced permanently, improvements to Hearts of Ice, and updated prizes.[3]

On 24 August 2020, Jagex released a new promotion for 50% off Treasure Hunter keys on the Oddments Store. At the same time, the Loot Duels Treasure Hunter promotion was running, which gives prizes providing a high conversion rate to oddments, which could be exploited to generate a large surplus of oddments. According to Jagex, around 4,000 players took advantage of these two promotions coinciding with eachother. On 28 August, it was deemed an abuse of a bug and 835 accounts were banned for 3 days, while 65 accounts were banned for 2 weeks and were subject to rollbacks. This generated widespread criticism from players who did not believe that a rule break had occurred.[4]

On 27 October 2020, Jagex released the Dwarven Discovery promotion, which featured the option of claiming an additional 250 oddments along with the prize and the normal oddments awarded. However, a check was omitted whether or not the user actually had keys to spend, resulting in players quickly amassing large quantities of oddments. Along with a 75% discount on medium prismatic lamps in the Oddments Store, this meant that it was possible to gain a large amount of experience in a very short time, with some players reporting going from level 1 to level 99 in a skill within 20 minutes.

On 11 April 2024, an updated version of the Vault of Riches promotion was added, with a prize of 1,000,000,000 coins being available from the diamond chest - the highest coin value that has ever featured as a prize on Treasure Hunter. The promotion also featured the return of slayer masks and wicked hood teleport tokens for the first time since they were removed from Treasure Hunter in 2021.
