What is an example of top down and bottom-up approach in teaching? ›

Learners can be encouraged to use both bottom-up and top-down strategies to help them understand a text. For example in a reading comprehension learners use their knowledge of the genre to predict what will be in the text (top down), and their understanding of affixation to guess meaning (bottom up).

Two processes are involved in listening. Top-down listening uses background knowledge and contextualizes words to aid comprehension. Bottom-up listening uses sounds, words, and other small units to create meaning.

In accounts of foreign-language listening and reading, perceptual information is often described as 'bottom-up', while information provided by context is said to be 'top-down'.

Rather than focusing in too deeply onto words, phrases and sentences selected by the teacher, we can present a whole text to a learner, and work from the top-end features (topics, context, broad arguments presented early in the text) down to the more specific features which the learner may struggle with.

Top-down methods, all of them, make PA as hard as possible by requiring beginners to hear and distinguish phonemes in their coarticulated spoken form.

Top-Down: More effective in larger organizations or teams where managing a large number of employees systematically is crucial. It helps in maintaining order and disseminating information efficiently. Bottom-Up: Suitable for smaller teams or organizations where close collaboration and quick decision-making are needed.

Bottom-up processing happens when someone tries to understand language by looking at individual meanings or grammatical characteristics of the most basic units of the text, (e.g. sounds for a listening or words for a reading), and moves from these to trying to understand the whole text.

Bottom-up is a reductionist theory, meaning it starts by observing a concept's most basic parts. The opposite of reductionism is holism theory, which is the theory for “top-down” processing. In top-down processing, the brain uses hypotheses or theories to fill in the blanks.

The top down method believes students gain understanding from text as they read. It does not specifically teach phonics but rather relies on students making sense of letters and vocabulary as they are exposed to text. The bottom up method, conversely, uses phonics as the primary mode of instruction.
