Founded in 1988, through a combination of organic growth and acquisition the Manhattan-based investment management firm BlackRock has grown to have assets under management (AUM) of roughly 9.4 trillion U.S. dollars as of November 2023, making them the world’s largest investment management company. Since 2008, BlackRock’s assets under management have increased by more than seven-fold. Notably, the company has publicly positioned itself at the forefront of the fight against climate change by openly committing to a net zero carbon economy by 2050, and requesting stronger transparency about their climate strategy.


What does BlackRock manage?

The main type of financial assets BlackRock invests in are equity securities typically in the form of stocks and shares, comprising the vast majority of the company’s portfolio. This is followed by fixed-income assets such as bonds, then cash, and alternative investments such as real estate and commodities. Over half of these assets are owned by clients residing in the Americas. There are over 1,000 individual investment funds operated by Blackrock, and investors are able to purchase shares in both actively and passively managed funds. Blackrock funds differ in their composition, for example by being limited to a particular region or country, restricted to specific financial assets, or being set up to track a particular stock index (through being comprised of the shares or commodities contained in that index). Who are BlackRock’s main competitors?

Pennsylvania-based Vanguard is the second largest investment management firm globally, although their total assets under management are over one trillion U.S. dollars less than that of BlackRock. Like BlackRock, there are a range of different individual investment funds operated by Vanguard, with the largest having roughly 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars of AUM alone. Another large competitor of BlackRock is Boston’s State Street, which managed assets worth more than 3.4 trillion U.S. dollars. The composition of State Street’s AUM is somewhat similar to BlackRock, in that equities and fixed-income assets comprise a larger overall share of State Street’s portfolio.
