Tips to make the most of your winter break - SMWC (2024)

As hard as it may be to believe, Christmas break is here, which means a break from classes, study sessions and exams. For college students, a break often means balancing relaxation and productivity. Who says you can’t do both? Here are some tips to help you make the most of your time over break.

1. Rest…you’ve earned it!
Whether you need to catch up on sleep, binge your favorite show or read a good book, it’s essential to take winter break to relax and recharge. You deserve it!

2. Be present
Remember that you’ve spent months away from friends and family that have missed you. Take time to connect and catch up with them. Grabbing coffee, dinner or making new memories can be the highlights of your time off school.

3. Set goals
It’s never too early to set goals for next semester. Reflect on this past semester. What worked? What didn’t? Getting organized or making a list of goals will only help your transition back into the spring semester.

4. Stay active
Although you’re on break, it’s important to keep a routine. Make sure to still stay active. Whether you prefer going for a walk at home or busting out a workout at the local gym, a little bit of exercise over break is good for the soul.

5. Work
Three or four weeks off school often means you have more time to work. Perhaps you have a part-time job from summer that would like to have you for a few weeks. Even if you don’t have a previous connection, restaurants, coffee shops and stores are always looking for extra help over the holidays.

6. Volunteer
Embrace the season of giving – giving your time by volunteering can be the greatest gift. Shelter houses, donation centers and meal kitchens can always use extra hands, especially in the winter.

7. Travel
Taking daycations or weekend trips is always the perfect adventure for winter break. There are several budget-friendly places to visit, from nature reserves to markets or even holiday events. Exploring new places can give you a fresh perspective and is a great way to recharge after a busy semester.

8. Stay organized
You may be home for about a month but don’t drop everything at the door and run. Keeping your necessities together is important so you aren’t stressed the day before leaving. Keeping your clothes or course items together will make for a smooth sailing-packing process as the break wraps up.
