With more time spent at home over the past few years, it’s no secret that many of us have binged our fair share of Netflix. Streaming services are set to continue dominating TV for the foreseeable future, so it’s no surprise that checking out the latest Netflix shows has become a regular part of many people’s lives. But when it comes to U.S. viewers, which states watch the most Netflix?
To find out, technology company Techelate looked at Google Trends search demand data and National Telecommunications and Information Administration survey data to determine which U.S. states are most likely to settle down with the latest Netflix binge.
Oregonians watch more Netflix than residents of any other state, binging a whopping 798 hours of the streamer per year. Following close behind are Utahns, who watch 782 hours of Netflix a year. Arizonans and Hawaiians are tied for third place, with residents watching 777 hours of Netflix per year. Virginia takes fourth place with 774 hours per year, and Washington rounds out fifth place with 772 hours a year.
On the flip side, North Dakota residents watch the least amount of Netflix each year, with the average person watching 662 hours worth of content each year. Other states that are less inclined to Netflix and chill include Iowa (673 hours per year), South Dakota (675 hours per year), Mississippi (679 hours per year), and West Virginia (684 hours per year).
Techelate also set out to figure out which states had the most “swindlers” — a.k.a. Netflix users who share their passwords with non-paying customers, a practice that the streamer has grown increasingly strict about in recent years.
Ohio residents are most likely to share their Netflix password with others, with 59% of Ohio Netflix subscribers admitting to doing so. The next worst offenders? Illinois (58%) and Massachusetts (57%).
